The season premiere of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ was a whirlwind of emotions as we saw the fallout from Meredith’s trial tampering, Chief Webber stepping in to save the day, and Cristina deciding what to do about her pregnancy.
Is anybody else an emotional basketcase after this two hour season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy or is it just me? Can I get a ‘seriously’ up in here? First of all, Derek you are a JERK! And secondly, Chief Webber I absolutely LOVE you. And thirdly, Cristina I want to give you the biggest hug in the world. AH! Let’s sort out our emotions and go over what just went down in the sinkhole that was Seattle Grace tonight.
I know I’m skipping to the end but in my opinion this was the most important thing that happened tonight: Meredith and Derek were dealt a big blow at the end of the episode when Zola was taken away from them so that they could be “re-evaluated” as parents. Adoption is an incredibly difficult process and Grey’s is doing a great job of depicting this; the scene where Meredith was listing off everything Zola needs was heartbreaking. Derek’s refusal to comfort Meredith after their daughter was taken away bordered on insanity. She shouldn’t have lied about losing her job or her separation from Derek, and she really risked a lot by running away with Zola into a closet but Derek made a good point (his only!) when he stressed that she was a great mother and her fault was loving people so much she’d do anything for them.
While Derek deserves a good smack in the face, Chief Webber made me stand up and cheer. Not only did he completely call Derek out for continuing to punish Meredith, but he took the fall for Mer, giving her her job back and allowing himself to spend more time with his wife. Plus he avoided jeopardizing his own clinical trial by subsequently giving it to Miranda. Yay Chief! Gold star for you!
As someone who really wanted to see Cristina as a mother and hoped she would keep the baby, I fully appreciated Meredith’s “I was raised by a Cristina” speech to Owen. It was not only beautifully delivered by Ellen Pompeo, but exceptionally written. Meredith plead Cristina‘s case to Owen from the perspective of an “unwanted’ child, and the plea was made all the more moving because it was made by a woman who so badly wanted to get pregnant herself. Abortion is obviously an extremely sensitive subject to bring up on such a major television show, but I thought Shonda Rhimes touched on it in a very realistic manner. When Cristina brought her hands up to start sobbing as Owen said he would go with her, how could you not cry? Then the look on both of their faces as the procedure began? Raw emotions and brilliant acting on both of their parts. I adore Sandra Oh.
Alex redeemed himself multiple times in this episode, finding and saving a child, lying to help Mer with Zola, asking for forgiveness, nearly dying by Cristina’s hand and then stepping up for Meredith when Derek callously refused.
I couldn’t decide whether I liked Teddy’s new worried wife schtick or whether it bothered me because they got married when they barely knew each other and now are dropping the “wife” and “husband” bombs around when they just started dating. Her interactions with Henry were sweet though, so I’ll give her a pass.
April is annoying. Jackson is hot … and the Gunther! That is all I have to say about them for now. Oh and Mark/Callie/Arizona had a cute threesome parent baby moment. Still need to get used to that storyline.
What did you guys think of the episode? Did you love it or hate it? What did you think of the patients and the amputation storyline? What do you think of Cristina’s decision? Of the Chief leaving? Of poor Zola? Let us know in your comments!
