Fashionistas attending the NYC Fashion Week shows snubbed their noses at Prince William’s bride, calling her just a “trend follower,” not a trendsetter. I strongly disagree! Do you?
“She is stylish but she’s not setting trends,” sniffed Gregg Andrews, a fashion director at Nordstrom’s department store, according to London’s Mail Online website. “If you take Kate out of the Royal Family, put her on a street in New York, you wouldn’t look at her twice.”
Shockingly Elle fashion news director Anne Slowey, seconds that opinion saying: Is she a style icon of the likes of Kate Moss? Absolutely not.”
Well snooty Fashionistas — Kate Middleton is one of the biggest fashion trendsetters in the world today and it’s precisely because she looks pretty, chic, appropriate, and yet totally relatable.
The fact that she’s not carrying around a Birkin bag, wearing the latest sky high Louboutins, swanning around in fur, suede ostrich feathers and decked out in the fresh-off-the-runway Prada, Versace or Gucci is exactly what makes her a trendsetter.
No, she’s absolutely NOT a fashion freak! She doesn’t have a stylist, she actually shops in affordable stores for young women like Zara, Reiss, Whistles and Banana Republic, just like millions of young women she sets trends for.
Young women around the globe have copied her style and have actually purchased the dresses she’s worn, or copycat versions. In fact, Kate Middleton’s navy blue Issa engagement dress sold out within 24 hours as did the tan Issa bandage dress she wore to meet Michelle Obama.
That makes her a trendsetter. Kate is so brilliant because she has plugged into the global Zeitgeist better than any celebrity or supposed fashion icon hailed by fancy fashion editors and department store directors.
Kate understands that we’ve been suffering through tough economic times and that uber expensive designer wear is beyond the reach of 99% of the female population. It would be insensitive to dress expensively in her role as the future Queen.
Instead, she has made it fashionable to re-wear outfits and accessories and to mix and match her wardrobe to create different looks. She has pulled coats and dresses out of her closet from five years ago and re-worn them.
That takes fashion guts in her position, when she is so under the microscope of scrutiny especially by the very snobby fashion pros who are now criticizing her.
But real women love it and they are following her classy example in droves.
Project Runway judge and Marie Claire fashion director Nina Garcia believes that the criticism has been way too harsh. Kate is “still new to her position. Princess Diana started out as being rather shy with her fashion choices before developing a sense of confidence and sophistication in her style,” she told Hollywoodlife.com. “We’ve only begun to see Kate’s style evolution and it looks promising.”
Whoever’s criticizing her — they should spike sales the way she has,” points out celebrity stylist Robert Verdi. “She’s definitely developing her own style. She’s like a newborn goat, teetering on her heels.”
Womenswear Gilles Mendel the designer for the J. Mendel collection insists that she is a trendsetter. “She defines a kind of woman that has style, is very strong, very secure.”
Finally celebrity stylist Philip Bloch doesn’t mince words: “This is a stupid and irresponsible quote (that she’s a follower.) “She is a leader and people do follow her. She’s a role model and she dresses like one. If that means she’s not wearing 6 inch Christian Louboutins and monkey fur vests, so what!”
