Michelle Williams On Heath Ledger's Death: It 'Changed How I See The World'!

Tue, September 13, 2011 1:10pm EDT by Chloe Melas 3 Comments

Michelle channels Marilyn Monroe in Vogue’s October issue and reveals Heath’s accidental drug overdose in 2008 made her a better friend and mother — and why she was born to play Hollywood’s most tragic actress.

Like Marilyn Monroe, Michelle Williams has suffered heartbreak and tragedy throughout her 31 years of life — which is why having Michelle play Marilyn in the upcoming film My Week With Marilyn was the perfect choice. Michelle tells Vogue that when her ex and father of her 5-year-old daughter Matilda tragically and unexpectedly died she felt like she and her daughter “didn’t have anything.” Find out why that’s all changed.

“Three years ago, it felt like we didn’t have anything, and now my life — our life—has kind of repaired itself,” she says. “[Heath’s death] changed how I see the world and how I interact on a daily basis. It’s changed the parent I am. It’s changed the friend I am. It’s changed the kind of work that I really want to do. It’s become the lens through which I see life–that it’s all impermanent.”

Michelle says her maturity is reflective in her recent roles such as her intensely emotional role as a Ryan Gosling‘s wife Cindy Periera in Blue Valentine. Michelle says her decision to play in Marilyn in director Simon Curtis‘ upcoming film was not an easy one — but she had to do it.

“As soon as I finished the script, I knew that I wanted to do it, and then I spent six months trying to talk myself out of it,” she says. “But I always knew that I never really had a choice. I’ve started to believe that you get the piece of material that you were ready for. I feel like something has changed for me, but it’s a new change, so it’s going to be hard for me to describe. Maybe it has something to do with turning 30. I don’t feel as shy or nervous or self-conscious. I have more confidence that I can handle what life brings me. I don’t feel scared to have an idea and express it. I feel giddy about it because it’s a complete transformation. It’s like I’ve found my voice.”

Check out the film when it hits theaters Nov. 4!
