It’s official! Eddie Murphy will host the 84th Annual Academy Awards on February 26.
“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” Oscar co-producer Brett Ratner is quoted as saying on Deadline.com. “With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances—especially on stage—I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show.”

It will be the first time the actor has hosted the awards ceremony, but he most recently served as a presenter in 2009. He also received an Oscar nomination for his performance in 2006′s Dreamgirls.
This marks the second time Eddie and Brett have worked together: Brett recently directed him in the upcoming comedy Tower Heist.
Brett’s co-producer Don Mischer, said “Eddie is a truly ground-breaking performer, whose amazingly diverse array of roles has won him a devoted audience of all ages. His quick wit and charisma will serve him very well as Oscar host.”
