Is It OK To Bond With Your Exes Ex As Taylor Swift & Reese Witherspoon Have Done?

Taylor Swift and Reese Witherspoon have both had the pleasure (or not, depending on how they look at it) of dating Jake Gyllenhaal — and now the two are becoming friends! Is it cool to bond with another one of his exes or should you abolishing any reminder of him from your life?

Jake’s exes first met the Country Music Awards in April. From that point on, a friendship blossomed. In fact, not only did Reese, 35, attend the country cutie’s Aug. 28 show at LA’s Staples Center, but the two also shared a girls-only dinner at Boa Steakhouse Aug. 28 — where they gossiped about Jake!

“They talked about how vain and self-absorbed Jake can be,” a source told Us Weekly. “They laughed about it.”

But is this kind of boy-bashing necessary, and does seeing another of his exes remind you constantly of your failed relationship?

Reese has happily moved on from her two-year lovefest with the Source Code star and married CAA agent Jim Toth this year. When they split, it appeared to have been her decision. However, 21-year-old Taylor didn’t seem to have fared the same, and seemed genuinely broken after her two-month affair with the actor ended. Although Taylor may be getting back together with ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner, she hasn’t moved on as solidly or completely as Reese has.

Becoming friends with another of your exes exes is completely fine. Assuming he has a type, you’re going to be bonding with someone who’s a heck of a lot like you. In fact, you should thank him for finding you a new BFF (well, maybe not). But if you’re going to have a friendship like Taylor and Reese are, you need to be mature enough to handle it.

What do I mean by this? Well, your ex is inevitably going to come up. But if you’re constantly talking or complaining about him after your initial few hang-out sessions, than he’s still an unhealthy presence in your life, and so is she. If Reese and Taylor continue to talk about how vain Jake is, they’ll never be able to sustain a true friendship. But if they can put him in the past in the future, then these gals are on the road to a beautiful, potentially lifelong relationship.
