The controversial rapper shocked everyone Aug. 28 when he snagged his first Moon Man! (Whoever was working the censor, you have my deepest sympathies.)

If you didn’t know who Tyler, the Creator was before the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, you do now! The 20-year-old rap prodigy — and leader of hip-hop group Odd Future — beat out Big Sean, Kreayshawn, Wiz Khalifa and Foster the People for Best New Artist. But the question is: Do you think he deserved it?

“I’m excited as f**k right now, yo!” Mr. Creator announced during his victory speech. “I’ve wanted this s**t since I was nine. I’m about to cry.”

He continued: “I can’t even believe I’m here right now. I didn’t write a thank-you speech. … To all the kids watching, you can do this s**t yourself.

Watch Tyler’s acceptance speech below, then vote: Do you think he deserved to win Best New Artist?

(Side note: MTV decided to have Selena Gomez and Taylor Lautner present the Best New Artist award together. Awkward much?)
