Rob Pattinson Should Pursue A Comedic Role, Say Hollywood Experts. Do You Agree?

Sat, July 16, 2011 8:02am EST by 50 Comments

Now that filming for both ‘Cosmopolis’ and ‘Twilight’ is over, Robert Pattinson has some time on his hands! Some Hollywood experts say Rob should pursue a completely different role than he has done in the past!

Now that Cosmopolis has wrapped, Robert Pattinson, 25, has some choices to make regarding his future in Hollywood. Should he do another dramatic film, or something totally out of his comfort zone? Hollywood experts weighed in, and most agree that he should do something totally different from Twilight!

Rob is familiar with roles in dramatic films, but there are some in Hollywood who say he shouldn’t go down that road again! Could we see the Twilight stud chalking up jokes instead?

“His Water for Elephants and Remember Me didn’t go over too well, so I’d stick away from drama,” Matthew Cole Weiss, director of Standing Still, said. “If he has comedic chops, that would gain him a lot more fans that aren’t teenage girls. But I think the best thing for him to do is work with HUGE directors in ensemble type films–like Soderbergh.”

Career Strategist and Family and Marriage Therapist Dr. Philip Dembo of CoachingLifeStrategies.com tells HollywoodLife.com, “You have to look at the theme of Rob Pattinson‘s roles, they have been primarily dark, misunderstood characters. I suggest he lighten it up and show us a different side to him.”

Even if R-Patz doesn’t go down the comedic route, almost everyone thinks he should do something different in his next movie.

Actress Aimee-Lynn Chadwick, 30, who starred in A Cinderella Story and Prom, suggests for Rob to do something out of his comfort zone, like an artsy role!

“He should be in a movie about the rat pack…or a movie where he can incorporate being a musician,” actress Aimee said.

Zombie author and creative screenwriting contributor Peter Clines feels that Rob should do something completely different from any role he has played before so he isn’t Edward Cullen forever! Should Rob shed his pretty-boy image and turn ugly?

“I think he just needs to get ugly,” Peter said. “Grow a scraggly beard, get a bad haircut, and take on some role that isn’t custom-made for a teen heartthrob.”

However, some do disagree, telling us that Rob should actually stick with his roots and pursue a role in another drama!

“He was great in Water For Elephants, it just wasn’t financially successful,” said a premiere talent agency assistant who wishes to remain anonymous. “I think he should stay in those realms of film. Drama is right up his alley!”

Nathan Bunker, Producer for the New Republic, agrees that Rob should continue doing what has worked for him in the past.

“I would think it would benefit him to take a harsher, grittier role based more on him being an adult rather than a teen,” Nathan said. “He will then be able to move about, just so long as he gets that grown-up-esque role.”

If Rob does go a different route with his acting career, I think he could blossom as a serious leading man in Hollywood. My advice to Rob: stop playing it safe and take a chance with a different role!

What kind of movie role would YOU like for Rob to chase next? VOTE!

WHAT THE HELL! Remember Me did AMAZING despite what people say the movie had a 16million budget for God’s sake && it made 70some million! it did great! && Water for Elephants is the top drama of the year as of now so that is not “not going over well” at all! Both movies did great & both showed the guy has real talent. && HELLO! DAVID-f*cking-CRONENBERG doesnt call people just because theyre POPULAR he calls talent when he sees it so Hollywoodlife & their experts can go to….

Another article on HL with a lot incorrect information. Get it together. Rob’s talent is growing, his “bank” is growing , and he is beloved by fans and respected by his peers. Proof- David Cronenberg doesn’t call you unless you can deliver.

That happens a lot in the film industry and doesn’t mean any less. Rob was who he sought out. It does kill you people to know that and I love it.

@renne: Have you watched ALL of his movies? Watching Twilight doesn’t count ‘cos it’s a crappy story to start with. I’d suggest Little Ashes and The Haunted Airman pre-Twilight and the upcoming movies for his post-Twilight work. He’s a work in progress in terms of his acting and he’s a really fast learner. IMO, what he has in spades is a raw, unmitigated IT factor. Very few people have had that over the many years of Hollywood history. He has the ability to immerse himself into his roles. He looks physically different in ALL his roles to the point of drowning in them somewhat. That kind of stuff can’t be learned or taught. He also has a knack of picking interesting characters and stories to be in. Again, Twilight doesn’t count lol. It started as an interesting, quirky, albeit imperfect little indie movie (the first one with Catherine Hardwicke as the director) and morphed into a humongous travesty of a franchise and I refuse to hold Rob responsible for that mess.

i watch all of them- including little ashes that you put as an example- like i said i really like robert :), and i agree with you he is a work in progress. but he has a lot to overcome, think that a comedy could be good to him work in not against or drama, it would show diversity.

When you’re starting out in acting you don’t really get to choose your roles. You take what you can get most of the time. It’s to Rob’s credit that people do not stereotype him and just see Edward in him.

it is really difficult to take seriously “experts” from HL, a site where the reporters behave like kids in highschool bullying celebrities that don’t give them their time or smile their way. the reporters here have a hate list and create lies about the people on the list, and the experts are mayba their relatives or friends.

Jocelyn you have said it all! Now that Rob has finished a Cronenburg film he needs to do something different then Twilight? HL do you even know anything about movies? OK you can describe Rob’s movies as dramas, but that also describes half the movies made. While the French describe Bel Ami as a comedy, I describe Twilight as a JOKE, so he is doing lots of things different from Twilight! Rob has already moved on from teen heartthrob to adult leading man, and can do anything he wants, having been mentioned for both a bio pic and a syfy blockbuster.

Your piece would be harmless fluff, if it wasn’t an attempt to again make Remember Me and Water for Elephants seem like Box Office failures, what gives HL can’t stand Rob being successful outside of Twilight, just like the shippers.

Your site is a joke and so are your “experts”. WFE is one of the top grossing dramas of 2011 and Bel Ami and Cosmopolis are not “safe” choices. Go do some much-needed research before you post idiotic articles like these again hoping for hits. Pattinson is doing what he needs to do; he is on a career arc that is engineered by a fine intellect and a curious mind backed by talent and good looks that are rare in Hollywood. Tell your “experts” that they should cater to their own lol-worthy careers and pray they get even 1% of the success Rob has had and will have for the next 30 years. He doesn’t need their “advice”.

Really!!and the funniest one, a family and marriage therapist?? Dr Whatever has an opinion about film that one really got me rolling .Robert Pattinson will be fine that’s why he has good people working with him , these so called experts should take their own advance and “shut it”everybody is trying to ride the “Pattinson train”now that is pathetic!

Bring on the “experts”! Never heard of these experts, the director and his movies, the actress (surely must be Meryl Streep’s rival??? LOL)… HL, stick to what you do best: gossip, rumours, and made-up stories about break-ups, false sightings, made-up reconciliations, and lay off career advice. Rob doesn’t need your advice or these nobodies’.

How about if the people in this site, get some culture, instead of asking unknown people in HW, and go read Bel Ami or Cosmopolis and you will notice that those roles have nothing to do with teen heartthrobs. And though in Remember Me and Water For Elephant he played the lead in romantic dramas, these are serious films and actually good films, that have nothing to do with the teen fantasy drama that Twilight is… or how about the fact that before making Twilight he did a low budget dark comedy like How to Be or he actually played Dali in Little Ashes.

But admit the truth here… you have no idea what you are talking about, you just want to make an article that would create reaction to obtain hits, just like you do the same writing three articles per day about Rob or Kristen. Is the best thing that happened to this site in a long time, isn’t it? to write BS about them and get lots of hits in return.

WFE wasn’t financially successful, that is completely incorrect. You’d better have these people do their research before they are quoted. Even RM made way more worldwide that what the budget and advertising came in at. Seems to me he is making a lot of interesting choices. Doing a Soderbergh ensemble piece sounds like that would have been intriguing ten years ago, not at all now.

LOL at the people who want to keep him locked in Twilight. Bottom line, Water for Elephants had a budget of $38 mil and has made $58.4 thus far domestically and brought in $116 worldwide. That’s a profit. In fact, all of Rob’s non-Twilight roles are pulling in profits which is more than can be said of his certain co-star. And you mention he just got done filming Cosmopolis with David Cronenberg and actually have the laughable advice he “needs to try something different” DUH! He’s doing just fine even if some people do not like it.

Agreed, but don’t knock Kristen. She’s doing just fine, too, and you know that neither of them choose their projects based on how much $$ they’ll make. Kristen was chumped when she didn’t get an Oscar nom for Welcome to the Riley’s. She’s AWESOME! I love her.

At least she got critical sucess for her non twilight movies. Wfe’s positive reviews are only because of christopher , Rosie and the great cinematography but it’s not surprising Reese and Rob suck.
As for BO success wfe wasn’t impressive at all , only $58 for a 38 mil budget with all the promo and world tour they didn’t even get $120 mil. Promo was impressive with load of TV spots and even one on IA, promo was huge. A movie with Reese W alone should have done better and with Robert pattison with her on the poster it should have done even better.

There is nothing great about WFE, the budget was twice RM’s and the BO was 2X bigger than RM so technically there is no improvement . WFE is even more disappointing because a big name like Reese Whiterspoon was in it too. LAME

I wouldn’t mind a role in a darker comedic movie, like something John Cusack-eque… High Fidelity.

Anyway, Rob has pushed limits and has taken many different types of roles in the past– artsy, humorous. It’s just that the public doesn’t always pay to see them.

David Cronenberg thought enough of him to cast him in Cosmopolis. He has acted alongside Chris Cooper, Christoph Waltz, Reese Witherspoon, Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ralph Fiennes. The man has a lot of talent, money, and admirers. Sucks to be you.

Why do people keep saying that Remember Me and WFE were not financially successful? RM made $20M profit and WFE has grossed $115M worldwide on a $38M budget. Neither were a blockbuster like Harry Potter or Transformers but they still made a decent profit. Rob has been taking on different roles but I would love to see him do a comedy or something in music. Whatever he does, I will be right there to watch it. The man is mesmerizing!!

They all know this and Water for Elephants is a hit that has outdone Source Code, Lincoln Lawyer, Scream 4, I am Number 4, Madea and the only reason they try to hang onto these dismissive comments about his films successes is because they wanted so much for him to fail. They just don’t want the sparkly vampire to prove them wrong. He’s already done that. And he’s a leading man in a Cronenberg picture. He has worked his butt off and shown he has what it takes without this chatter.
