The ‘Harry Potter’ star revealed in an interview with the U.K.’s GQ magazine that he’s experienced one of the most destructive pitfalls of young stardom — too much booze.
Thanks to his starring role in all of the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe is one of the wealthiest and most successful young people in the biz, but it’s not always as easy as it looks. The actor revealed that when he realized he was becoming too attached to alcohol, he had to call it quits all together.
Daniel began drinking whiskey on the set of 2009′s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but somehow managed to avoid ever being exposed by the paparazzi. “I really got away with that because there were so many instances when a paparazzi shot like that could have been taken,” he explained. A photo of a publicly intoxicated “Harry” would have seriously damaged Daniel’s squeaky-clean public image.
Now the star of the Broadway play How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Daniel has been making moves to ensure that his career didn’t peak as a child star. Like many other young people in Hollywood, he almost let the party-hard lifestyle get the best of him, “I became reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff … There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me.”
He realized he needed to make a major change when he wrapped filming the last installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2. “There’s no shame in enjoying a quiet life,” he said. “And that’s been the realization of the past few years for me … I’m actually enjoying the fact that I can have a relationship with my girlfriend [Olive Uniacke] where I’m really pleasant and not f**ked up totally all the time. As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn’t work for me. I’d just rather sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh.”
Daniel even skipped his last movie premiere in order to avoid temptation. It’s great to hear that the 21-year-old star is smart enough to end his dangerous addiction before it began to destroy his health and his career — Other stars should learn from him!
