The critics are not being kind, but will YOU still go see it?
Selena Gomez is so excited about her new movie Monte Carlo, but unfortunately critics don’t have too many kind words for the movie — or it’s star!
Selena, 18, is getting torn apart by critics who are panning her performance — and they’re getting quite nasty! Here’s what some leading reviewers had to say about the film — and Selena’s performance:
Jake Coyle of the Associated Press writes, “Gomez, while endearingly earnest, doesn’t command the screen. It’s essentially her first semi-adult film, and one feels her stretching.”
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times writes, “[The movie is] chirpy, it’s bright, there are pretty locations and lots happens. This is the kind of movie that can briefly hold the attention of a cat.”
Scott Tobias of The A.V. Club writes, “Monte Carlo finally resolves itself in a farcical climax that at least shows a little energy, but it isn’t enough to overcome the discomfiting tensions and indifferent formula filmmaking that plagues nearly every scene. In every sense, Gomez is just following a script.”
Roger Moore of the Orlando Sentinel writes, “Selena Gomez is all girl in her first star-vehicle big-screen comedy, Monte Carlo. But that’s a problem, as she is so utterly out of her league with her grown women co-stars as to seem like a mascot to Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy.”
Nick Schager of Slant Magazine writes, “Gomez is likewise adequately cute, but too bland to lend the proceedings any vivid character, except for the few scenes that allow her to indulge her cold, sarcastic, nasty side as Cordelia.”
What do you think HollywoodLifers — are the critics just jealous of Selena’s success?
