The troubled MTV star began a long stint at the Seasons Recovery Center in Malibu on Sunday, June 26, following her scary suicide bid this month.
And friends say Teen Mom Amber Portwood broke down when the time came to say goodbye to her two-year-old daughter Leah, because “she’s terrified she’ll never see her baby again.”
“Amber could barely hold it together,” an insider tells OK! Magazine. “She was crying so hard, it was scaring Leah. She’s really going to miss her baby and she’s scared that she’ll never get custody back.”
Earlier reports suggested Amber would spend 30 to 60 days at the rehab center, but sources now claim her stay could be as long as six months — and she’s worried Leah will forget who she is while she’s being cared for by dad Gary Shirley.
The source adds, “Six months is a really long time. Leah is only 2 years old. She wants to get help so she can be a good mom to Leah, but right now her child is really her only source of love in this world. She’s hysterical at the thought of spending so much time away from her.”
Experts tell OK! that Amber’s stint in rehab could help her regain custody of Leah from Gary — but only if she stays on the straight and narrow.
Family law attorney Vikki Ziegler explains, “It can be a double-edged sword. If a parent relapses during treatment or doesn’t complete the program, it could affect the court’s decision.”
Amber’s troubles all seem to stem from the legal mess that followed her fight with Gary that was captured by the Teen Mom cameras. At a court hearing on May 11, Gary was awarded custody of Leah, with Amber only allowed to spend two hours a week with her daughter. That prompted her downward spiral — which culminated with her horrible suicide bid on June 14.
Is rehab the right move for Amber — or is she causing more harm by separating herself from her daughter?
