Moms-to-be who pile on the pounds when pregnant could be exposing their unborn children to lower intelligence; schizophrenia, behavioral problems and eating disorders.

Pregnant women have traditionally reserved the right to ‘eat for two’ but new research says gaining too much weight during pregnancy is dangerous to children’s development.

Scientists at Canada’s McMaster University pored over a dozen studies on the subject and were startled by the results.

The children of obese moms were found to have IQ scores five points lower; and are more likely to suffer attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and eating disorders themselves, among other conditions.

The Canadian researchers believe hormonal and chemical changes in the womb are responsible for the dramatic findings.
