For well-wishers who wanted to send Prince William and Kate a wedding gift, the couple set up a charitable fund instead—and there sure were a lot of eager contributors!
More than $1.7 million was raised for charity by the Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund, according to Buckingham Palace.
The fund was set up “for members of the public who have kindly suggested that they wanted to give the couple a gift,” a spokeswoman for the Royals said.
The money generated included well-wishers’ direct contributions, as well as wedding-related initiatives, such as a donation by Decca Records from the sales of the official Royal Wedding Album, and a donation by celeb shutterbug Mario Testino from sales of the photo of William and Kate in the wedding program.
The 26 charities that will benefit from the fund were grouped into specific areas: Changing Lives through Arts and Sport; Children Fulfilling Their Potential; Help and Care at Home; Support for Service Personnel and Their Families; and Conservation for Future Generations.
