The accused killer shared a jail cell with another mom whose young child accidentally drowned in a swimming pool and was discovered by his grandfather — the same fate Casey’s defense team claims Caylee suffered.
Prosecutors are now investigating the possibility Casey Anthony crossed paths with April Whalen during their time together in Orange County Jail in 2009.Casey’s attorney Jose Baez presented the drowning story during his opening statement. He claimed Caylee‘s body was found by Casey’s dad George Anthony, who helped cover up her death.
A member of the public alerted prosecutors to similarities between Casey’s story and that of April Whalen, whose child died under the same circumstances, and who spent five days in the same jail as Casey.
Whalen, who was serving time for a string of offenses unconnected to the death of her child, claims she never talked to Casey — but prosecutors suspect she may have spoken to other inmates who relayed her story to the 25-year-old.
Casey is accused of murdering Caylee and dumping her body in woodland, where she was found in December 2008, six months after she went missing. If found guilty of first degree murder she faces a possible death sentence.
