The actress traded in her blonde tresses for her natural brown hair! Could it be for a role?

Carey Mulligan is going against the old adage that you lighten your hair for summer and darken it for winter. Could she be darkening her ‘do for her upcoming role as Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby?

Carey was spotted with the new ‘do when out to dinner on May 17 in NYC with Baz Luhrmann, who is directing the upcoming film version of classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Carey gets to play Daisy to Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Jay Gatsby — lucky girl!

When Mia Farrow first took on the role of Daisy in the 1974 film version of the novel, she has short blonde hair that was curled to just below her ears. Fitzgerald is not very descriptive about Daisy’s physical appearance and besides a few off-hand mentions of her hair, it is left up to the reader to decide how her hair looks. The new version of the film is set to hit screens in 2012 so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Carey originally went blonde for her role as a prostitute in the 2009 Johnny Depp film Public Enemies and the peroxide blonde dye was incredibly damaging to her hair. Maybe she’s happy to finally be back to her roots!

Do you think Carey went back to being brunette for a role or is she just trying something new?
