'American Idol' Outrage: The Wrong Person Got Sent Home!

What the heck happened on ‘American Idol’ May 12? We sent the wrong contestant packing — he should have won!

We didn’t see this one coming. In the biggest shocker on American Idol this season, the judges’ favorite (and the expected contestant to win) — James Durbin — was sent packing May 12. What went wrong?

James, 22, has been one of the most consistent contestants throughout season 10 and we had him pegged to go all the way through the end. Not only does he have the vocal talent of a rockstar, James won us over with his plight: he has both Asperger’s Syndrome AND Tourette’s … talk about beating the odds.

HollywoodLife.com‘s reporter, Russ Weakland, was in the audience during the live taping and said James handled his exit like a champ.

“The audience was booing the decision really loudly, but all James did was go over to Scotty and say, ‘You better win this; you have to win this…”

Russ added, “This is when Scotty started balling and couldn’t control his emotions and was crying heavily.”

Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart are the only three contestants left standing. This is the first time since season six we’ve had a female in the top four.

Do YOU think a girl will win this season? How did you feel about James getting the boot? Sound off below!

Kirstin Benson, with reporting by Russ Weakland

I seriously can not believe that James got voted off. He was by a mile the best and all rounded talent. He never had a bad week and truly could sign anything; that he proved over and over. It is a real shame when the best doesn’t make it to the final. Maybe America should not vote, clearly they are stupid. I think the judges should have a portion of the vote, as in dancing with the stars.

First of all what do you expect people to think?

Here’s a guy who never was in the bottom 3 at all, all of a sudden out, the same time Daughtry goes out. I agree with Chad when he said it was poor planned. “Don’t fix something when it isn’t broken”. You guys should have left the numbers the way it was. Why change them so late into the competition when viewers are use to a certain way? If you wanted to be different, do it at the beginning of the show or next season. However nothing should have been changed when we are so closed to the end, so of course people are going feel something was up.

voted James
wanted a James/Scotty/Haley top 3
to me, that would have been the most interesting
all such different sounds and styles

but soon as Lauren’s name was called,
all hopes were dashed, figured both girls would make it
Lauren has a beautiful voice, but she had the weakest performances this week and every song sounds the same to me
[plus she almost killed James with her dress, I am guessing an accident]

James is an awesome singer and performer. He showed America you can overcome anything and reach for your dreams. He will do great because he can do the music he wants his way. AI producers are really ignorant that they let him go without even looking into the votes. He will end up doing better than all of them anyway. Good luck to Scotty and Lauren. Haley your attitude stinks and an idol should not have an attitude they should be grateful. Just for that she should have gone home but I guess America feels its okay for her to be disrespectful. James I will buy your CD and see you in concert, God bless you.

The wrong person went home? Really? What a shocker! I can’t believe that a show as honest and forthright as American Idol would do something like that…… heh!

OOPS! I just threw up a little in my mouth.

I will no longer watch Idol after thursday’s results show. Voting based on “faith” on Idol is almost as repulsive, irresponsible and dishonest as it is in politics. Scotty doesn’t even hold a candle to James and never has. The judges are culpable in this outcome by not calling him out the way that Simon would have, and then they whine and cry at the results. I have lost all respect for all of them. “Faith” is nothing more than an emotional appeal. Let’s be honest people. We have NO eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life. The gospels were written anonymously with the church adding the names in later, and the earliest, Mark, wasn’t even written until 65 AD. The original manuscripts have not been found and no other contemporary historians even mention him. Emotional attachment to belief, although strong, does not make it true, and emotional blackmail with threats of hell no longer work on those of us who think.

Dont hold your disbelief against Scotty. He is a sweet young man who doesnt deserve the slams against him and who deserves the final as much as anyone!

Rich, I disagree with you: You are allowing your preference for the kind of music James performs to interfere with a fair judgment IMO. I have seen excellent criticisms of James, but I think he is a great performer and a beautiful human being so I will not list any of these.

I come from a show business family- uncle won 2 Acad Awards, & many others- composing/producing, pres of Acad as well. dad nominated. Mom& aunts headlines Vaudeville & Broadwy night clubs, sis picked for Bye Bye Birdie lead but her dancing wasn’t good enough so Ann Margret got the role- exposed to top performers from early childhood and I know talent.

James is marvelous entertainer and a spectacular human being. Scotty a fine young man who will become a top-notch CW singer- and he’s darn good now. Hayley arguably maybe the most talented- very versatile- but lacks charisma IMO. I admire her abilities but am not a “fan”. Lauren quite talented and will mature beautifully; lovely voice.

I wanted James to win this- and I do not like Metal or most rock either. As I said, I think he is a true entertainer, is a beautiful person, and has tremendous courage. He and I share TS- no fun at all.

The inane voting protocol is what caused James’ exit- which never should have happened. I have read many blogs where people have complained that james’ 1 line was always busy and one said the other just kept ringing. Comes from jamming the circuits and this comes from allowing unlimited voting– less than 7 mil watched but almost 72 mil votes– all done to make it look like far more people vote than in reality. 300 votes a cinch- so, for example, 100 thous peop could easily generate 30 million votes. Not even bringing in the robot voting!

BTW, I am a biblical researcher by avocation. :o) Not the right forum here, however, I think, to go into this topic.
I might say one thing, though? When one has a witness of the Holy Spirit, it is not an experience of emotion; you have to experience a testimony to understand it, and it goes beyond any issues the Bible may have (and there are many, for sure).

I’ve been voting for Scotty all season. James was my 2nd favorite for a long time, but Lauren moved into that spot the last couple weeks. If Scotty or Lauren win, I’m happy.

This NOT the first season since Season Six that we’ve had a girl in the top 4. Allison Iraheta was in the top 4 in Season 8, and Crystal Bowersox came in 2nd last year. Get your facts straight!

He should have gone home after he butchered the Bon Jovi song, if it weren’t for his over the top theatrics each week, people would have noticed much earlier that he was pitchy every week, seriously off key & the majority of his performances were Karaoke at best. This guy received loads of attention bc of his disability, which by the way began as Tourette’s and High functioning Autism & migrated to Asperger’s after he said some not so “proper” comments so what does he actually have? Does anyone know? The judges handled him with kid gloves, and it only hurt him in the end! He needed feedback to improve & didn’t get any. He has potential but needs vocal training or auto tune.

I was quite relieved when it was announced that James was going home. He has been consistently mediocre all season – frequently off-key and screaming in a way that was painful to listen to. The judges were pimping him shamelessly for their own reasons and never delivered the criticism which he deserved and which might have helped him improve. So many people take the judges at their word and voted for him mindlessly thinking he was “the best”. Kinda sad, really. People also vote based on sympathetic backstory rather than vocal talent. I think alot of people finally say just how mediocre his voice really is and no longer voted for him.

America didn’t get this wrong – we couldn’t get our votes through. I had voted for James in previous weeks but that night could not get through on his phone lines. I posted about my problems voting on Thursday morning on the American Idol forums. Now there are many, many complaints on their website from people who also had problems and people are outraged. American Idol knows about this, but isn’t doing anything about it, which is making a lot of people think the show is rigged.

James might’ve got sent home, but he’s the real winner!! He don’t need no stinking title to becomae a star. He’s already working on his first single. And he’s been talking to Daughtry’s producer. He’s also getting a homecoming tomorrow like the Top 3 sponsored by Idol.
