“To follow in the steps of a great talent like Galliano is not an easy job,” Wang said when asked if Sarah Burton is ready to move on from McQueen.
After billions of people tuned in to the Royal Wedding and saw Kate Middleton in her gorgeous gown, Sarah Burton became a household name — although the fashion set has already been buzzing about Sarah for a while! Not only was it rumored that Sarah was behind Kate’s gorgeous dress, but reports claim she might have been chosen to replace John Galliano at Dior. HollywoodLife.com got to catch up with Vera Wang, who hosted the screening of L’Amour Fou in NYC on May 1, where she weighed in on whether or not Sarah could fill Galliano’s shoes at Dior.
“I think it very much depends on Sarah and what her long and short end goals are. You know with a house like Dior there’s tremendous pressure,” Wang said. “I think that kind of pressure is very different from the pressure of having assisted at Alexander McQueen and I think it’s going to be up to her [Sarah] and how much she’s really up for. Not only artistically but personally — and where her heart lies.”
While Wang thinks Sarah is very talented, she understands the immense pressure succeeding Galliano will entail. “There’s a fine line between art and commerce and it’s extremely difficult to transverse for most of us. At the moment at McQueen she has the freedom, (well no one has complete freedom but she has a certain degree of freedom), and notoriety. To follow in the steps of a great talent like Galliano is not an easy job.”
Regardless of whether Sarah decides to make the move over to Dior, there’s no denying the fact that she made history with the breathtaking dress she created for Kate Middleton. “It moved the house of McQueen into a global status brand,” Wang said. “By showing restraint and control and having the ability to adapt to the ocassion and what was needed shows that Sarah’s not only a worthy heir but a great business woman. And you need to have both today.”
