So What Is Kate Middleton's New Last Name? Click Here To Find Out!

Fri, April 29, 2011 8:55pm EDT by 32 Comments

Kate Middleton’s new royal status comes with more than just one name change!

Being a member of the Royal family means carrying titles such as Count or Countess, Duke or Dutchess, Prince or Princess — and if you are Kate Middleton and Prince William, it’s all of the above! Many are wondering the official name Kate has taken now that she has said “I do.”

Prince William’s official surname is Mountbatten-Windsor. Mountbatten is a nod to Queen Elizabeth‘s descendants, while Windsor is from Prince Phillip’s side. After leaving Westminster Abbey, Kate was a Mountbatten-Windsor as well.

However, being a Royal, surnames are only used when formally needed. Now that Kate is a member of the exclusive family, she will only be known as Princess Catherine to the public.

Do YOU think the Royals should use their surnames more often? Sound off in the comments!

There is misinformation in this post; like many have said before me, you should either fix the mistakes or take this down; it will confuse people. Please do a bit more research when you intend to write an article next time, please. :)

You’ve got it backward. Prince Phillip was Mountbatten, and as a descendent of George V Queen Elizabeth was a Windsor. However, she chose to distinguish her family with the name of Mountbatten-Windsor

hi,

i think that Mountbatten is from Prince Phillip’s side and Windsor is the surname of the Royal Family – meaning Queen Elizabeth’s side.

HRH Princess Elizabeth is know to us as the Duchess of Cambridge. Her status as Princess Catherine will be instated once she becomes the Princess of Wales, when Prince Charles becomes King of England!

Noticed you have deleted my comment from your site. Why – not offensive in any way, just informative.

Interesting – an online site based ‘in the land of the free’ believes in censorship.

The explanation for the hyphenated name is totally backwards. Elizabeth’s famiy’s last name is Windsor, a name adopted during WW I when their former name, German in origin, was changed to something more English sounding during the war. Prince Phillip, a nephew of Lord Mountbatten, added the Mountbatten half of the name.
William has been known to go by simple William Wales, but that’s not official.

I think the article intends to say that the family names are from the royals’ ANCESTORS, not their descendants! Descendants are those who follow us, not precede us. Where is a fact checker and an editor when you need one? The family names are also reversed. Poorly done….

Who wrote this? TOTALLY NOT CORRECT!!! Mountbatten is from Prince Philip. Windsor is from Queen Elizabeth…a name her Great Great Grandfather CREATED to get away from their German roots. In addition to that, Kate will NEVER EVER be known as PRINCESS CATHERINE!! Absolutely, totally incorrect. Princess is a BORN title. She will BECOME PRINCESS OF WALES when Charles becomes King, however, she will be PRINCESS WILLIAM of Wales…Get your facts correct before you state them here. You look stupid

Actually you’re stupid. You’re right about some parts, but Kate Middleton is already known as Princess William of Wales, once Charles becomes King and William becomes THE prince of Wales, she will be Princess Catherine.

What a load of rubbish.
Mountbatten is a nod to Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth is of the House of Windsor.

Also THE HEIR TO THE THRONE, CHARLES AND HIS SON’S ARE WINDSOR ALONE. NO Mountbatten, by official decree shortly after Queen Elizabeth’s marriage.

I kind of figured it would be a combination of Mountbatten and Windsor. But to point out an error – Windsor is the Queen’s “last name” (as in the House of Windsor)and Mountbatten is Prince Phillip’s last name.

You have it backwards in the article, Montbatten is from Prince Phillips family, as he is descended from the Battenburgs and Windsor is from Queen Elizabeths family.

Mountbatten is the name Prince Philip chose upon his marriage to Princess (Now Queen) Elizabeth. The Queen comes from the Windsor line. Only the untitled male issue of her line will have the surname of Mountbatten-Windsor. Royalty with titles do not use a surname. They go by their titles. Princes William and Harry used the surname Wales in the military as that was part of their title. (Prince William of Wales) Kate is not a Princess, she is a Duchess. Her title would be Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness of Carrickfergus.

Surey it’s the other way around – Windsor is from the Queen’s side and Mountbatten from the Duke’s side? Anyway, Kate will technically be known to the public as Princess Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (Catherine Duchess of Cambridge, or Catherine of Cambridge for short), negating the need for a surname as this defines her from other Princess Catherine’s.

Why shouldn’t Mountbatten be a nod to Queen Elizabeth’s descendants? They are her children. Her ancestors are probably just relieved not to have that sordid Hanover thing brought up.
Yes, if they use their surnames more, we won’t have to worry about confusing them with some other Prince William or Queen Elizabeth.

The Queen is from the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha house not Hanover. due to the marriage of Quuen Victoria and Prince Albert. The name was changed in 1917 due to Anti-German sentiment to Windsor after the castle the Royal family was living in.

I believe it is spelled duchess, without the T. And I agree: the Queen is a Windsor, and the Prince Consort a Mountbatten.

You’re wrong. She is a duchess ANF a princess. Her official titles are Princess William (weird I know) and Her Royal Highness, Duchess of Windsor. It was stated during the royal wedding.

Don’t believe me? Look it up.

I believe she will never be known as queen since she is not the daughter of a king. She will always be Princess Catherine, just as Diana would have always been Princess Diana. That’s why Prince Phillip is Prince, not king – he was not descended from the king of england.

Prince Philip is not Titled King because he is not the monarch. Catherine would become Queen if her husband becomes King because she would be Queen Consort in th same way that the Queen’s (Late)Mother was to King George V1.
