Michael Douglas opens up to Oprah about how wife Catherine-Zeta Jones is dealing with her bipolar II disorder, says she’s “relieved” she can understand it now

Michael Douglas spoke with Oprah Winfrey today about his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, and how she attempted to hide her depression while he dealt with his stage four throat cancer. He also reveals Catherine was “upset” about being “outed” with bipolar II disorder after checking into a mental-health facility.

“I think its very hard for the spouses. The last year and a half, my oldest son is in federal prison, my ex-wife is suing me, my cancer. It’s hard for my wife to say ‘Well I’m depressed,'” Michael explains, then jokingly adds, “You’re depressed huh? How ’bout [try] some cancer?”

It’s all seriousness, Michael, 66, discusses his wife’s disorder. “Bipolar is typically like manic depression. Bipolar II is not as bad with the mania, but it’s still pretty heavy with the depression.” He adds that Catherine is Welsh so “it’s all stip upper lip and you can’t let your feelings show.”

“She as upset she was outed with it. She has been quite open about it since she has been outed. She went to get treatment and some patient must have said you’ll never guess who is here now. Once she was outed, she knew she had to get out her story.”

The actor is very proud of his wife for handling the situation by seeking treatment. “She has to be stoic and deal with the stuff I’m going through. By the time I’m off the hook you finally relax and let go, and I’m so proud pf her for analyzing it and taking care of it.”

So how is Catherine doing now? “She is doing great, she is shooting a movie down in Louisiana and I think she is relieved she has an understanding because she was not clearly aware of what was going on.”

And as for Michael’s son Cameron who is in jail, Michael says “He is in real positive shape, he has assumed responsibility for what he has done, he is going to be a fine actor for what he has done.” But ever the comedian, Michael tells Oprah, “Your show is big in there.” Oprah replies by saying “Hi Cameron!” into the camera.

Michael sounds like he is in high spirits and is taking his turn supporting his wife after she helped him recover from a near-fatal disease. Our best wishes that the family continues to strengthen and get better!
