Rob Pattinson Is Praised & Slammed In 'Water For Elephants' Reviews — Are These Critics Too Mean?

Thu, April 21, 2011 1:17pm EDT by 68 Comments

Robert Pattinson’s performance in Water for Elephants is getting mixed reviews! Will you go see the movie anyway, despite what the negative critics say?

We have all been anxiously awaiting seeing Robert Pattinson perform alongside Academy Award winners Christoph Waltz and Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants, and tomorrow the wait is over! Unfortunately, movie critics who have already seen the film have released their reviews and while some praise Rob as “entirely convincing”, others are calling him “woefully untalented”, “lifeless” and “dull”. Ouch! Are they being too harsh?

Critics are very split on whether Rob’s performance and the movie itself are entertaining, or utterly boring. The Associated Press says “Witherspoon and Pattinson are a three-ring snooze-fest together”, calling Christoph the “lone attraction” who highlights how “dull” Reese and Rob are. They go as far as saying, “The movie is a long, long way from the greatest show on Earth; at best, it might be the greatest show in your local theater, assuming it’s the only film playing there.”

The Huffington Post is even crueler to Rob, completely panning him in their review. Not only do they call Rob “woefully untalented” they say the “dreadful” movie “rests on the head of the sleepy-eyed Pattinson, an actor so lifeless that you keep expecting someone to put a mirror to his nostrils. Oh wait – wrong movie.” The attack doesn’t stop there: “Pattinson had better hope that someone writes a whole bunch more of the Twilight novels because once those movies run out, his string as a movie star is probably up. He has no discernible talent as an actor, beyond a bedroom gaze that seems to express very little of what’s on his mind.” Can you believe it? Poor Rob!!

The Chicago Tribune is nicer in its review, saying the movie is “Like ‘The Notebook,’ but with an elephant.” The review attempts to compliment Rob while somehow simultaneously insulting him: “Waltz’s archetypal villain cannot help but steal focus when he’s on-screen, partly because of the abuse of which the character is capable, partly because Waltz is just so damned interesting to watch. That’s more than can be said for Pattinson, who is easy to take without having yet made a single surprising or provocative choice as an actor. Yet he, too, is at least in there working his two or three notes hard, and often effectively.” We think there was a compliment in there somewhere.

Moviehole is very positive about Rob’s performance, saying he matches Christoph and Reese “scene for scene.” “Who knew this kid could act?? Well done young man,” it proclaims.”

Finally, the Hollywood Reporter provides us comfort. “Looking 300 per cent better than he did in his last non-‘Twilight’ outing, ‘Remember Me,’ Pattinson is entirely convincing as Jacob, a Cornell veterinary school student who escapes from the ruin provoked by his parents’ untimely death by almost inadvertently joining the circus.’ Unfortunately they still think “the vital spark that would have made the drama truly compelling on the screen is missing.”

The reviews are still pouring in so there’s still a chance for more positive opinions. But we are shocked by how harsh these critics are towards the Hollywood heartthrob. Are you upset at their cruel comments? Are you going to see the movie despite what they say? And how do you predict Rob will be on film alongside Christoph and Reese? Sound off below!

U.S. critics are unculture people and very negative. I have to say that if they like fast and furios, never say never y things like that, what can we expect?
We all know that ROBERT has to work harder than the us boring actors because Robert, thanks God, is english.
ROBERT YOU ARE GREAT.

Some of these critics haven’t even seen the movie, which is spectacular by the way, and just want to slam Rob for they feel he has yet to pay his dues. Well, listen up critics. No one gives a …. what you say for Mr. Pattinson is here to stay and is well on his way to being a leading man. He has the looks, height, and intelligence to pull it off and nothing you can say will make any difference. The people have spoke concerning this movie, going to see it multiple times because IT IS A MOVIE, AN ACTUAL BEAUTIFUL MOVIE.

How do you know these critics didn’t see the movie when they gave their assessment? We get it; you don’t like seeing your screen idol getting slammed.

It is amazing how much unattractive people hate attractive people. I’am not some starry eyed girl and I enjoy Robert P very much. From the time he was announced as the Jacob in this film I could see it. Who do they want to play it. As far as the Huffington Post goes anyone who reads it is the idiot and to believe anything in it a double idiot.

I’ve been on sites checking the box office track for WFE. It’s is projected to finish THIRD this weekend. RPattz is losing to an animated bird (Rio) and a man in drag (Madea), 1st and 2nd respectively. Madea is opening at 2100 theaters, WFE is opening at 2700. Rio opened LAST WEEK. With all the promotion they’ve done WFE should finish 1st. I guess the Twi hards and desparate housewives are not enough to put him over the finish line. This should be a wake-up call for Pattinson (and Lautner too) that being a tween-teen gir/cougar fantasy will only get you so far. The BO receipts for WFE will be taken into account for his next film project.

Have you seen this movie? Do you think the amount of money a movie makes a movie great? Many great movies even flopped at the box office..like Its a Wonderful Life.
I am an educator with 40 yrs in the field. I loved the book and really enjoyed the movie… Mr. Pattinson gave a strong performance I think.
BTW what is one f the most poipular and money making tv shows? Jersey Shores…. I guess you think this is excellent based on your criteria

I simply do not get it. Are these critics 12, like so many Rob haters?!? Anywho, I loved the movie and Rob…All this proves to me is that some people simply want to bring Rob down, completely without reason. He got too big too fast, and this does not sit well with them…I have enjoyed Robert in everything that he has been in, and i thank him, for after i lost my lovely husband and my children lost their amazing father, Twilght was a wonderful distraction for my kids. Since this, i too have become a Robert fan. He has been a wonderful distraction for me. I love his music, his other movies, and i especially love the beautiful person he is inside and out. Certainly someone who does not deserve such harsh critisizm…He is such a genuine, lovely young man, whose humility and gentleness, may not be able to take such uncalled for critisizm. Yet, he took it with Twilight, and has survived. I hope he can feel the love too…Thank you Robert for so much…You have done what many artist hope to do, and that is touch a life, like you have mine and my families. You are a talented person, and actor.

I just saw the movie “Water for Elephants” today & it was GREAT. I don’t care what other people or critics say. For any Rob or Reese fans this is a definately MUST SEE. Judge for yourself. I love seeing Rob with the animals. I don’t go to many movies, it cost way too much money, but this one was worth it.
Can’t wait for Breaking Dawn.

I’m a guy. I don’t care about Rob Pattinson. I actually had to look at the headline to type his name in correctly, lol.
But these aren’t “professional critics”.
Check what Ebert, LA Times, NY Times, etc. say.
Go to Rottentomatoes and click top rated critics. See what they have to say. Maybe he sucks. I don’t care. Just stop giving hack reviewers credibility.

he’s good looking but he’s not an actor. he’s dreadfully untalented. but it’s ok because a lot of people are superficial enough to be a fan anyway. he’ll ride off his looks because that’s all his fans care about, if they saw anything more in him than his pretty face they would understand that he couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag. i agree though, that movie critics know nothing about what people will want to see. they don’t understand what’s entertaining and what isn’t. apparently watching r patz’s one facial expression for 2 hours is entertaining for some people.

He was convincing in his portrayal of Dahli in Little Ashes, touching in Bad Mother’s Handbook, endearing in How To Be, riveting in Remember Me and brought the “perfect looking and tortured” Edward to life in Twilight. Rob is young and learning. It’s so typical of Hollyweird to knock down anyone that rises suddenly to fame and fortune. He knows he is blessed and lucky. He is not arrogant and has remained humble and nice despite his sudden fame and attention by really devoted fans. His fan base has expanded and he has a certain charisma that makes him watchable.

Now if he would only lose his Kristen baggage that continues to tie him to Twi Saga. Rob is cool solo or with the most eligible women in Hollywood on his arm. When Rob hangs with his friend Kristen even after she has insulted the fans and says shocking things like “be healthy and fxxx everybody”, makes him look like a loser. Kristen behaves twitchy, mannish, rude, crude, strange and hostile is not the way to garner a mature fan base. Rob needs to lose his ties to Twi and KShrew if he wants a long career and to be taken seriously. He looks like a wimp to be with such a manly and bossy girl.

For all you Kristen fans….she would refuse to sign autographs, give you the finger, spit in your eye and call you a fxxxxxx retard if you met her. She is not nice and not worthy of your devotion. Do your homework or google it. The girl is not sweet and only pretends to be feminine when made to behave by her bosses.

Another blind shipper who doesn’t want to hear any negative criticism about her dream man, even if it’s valid. Anyone who voices a different opinion is dismissed as jealous. No matter how vehemently you defend RPattz, he’s not going to come to your house and beg you to sleep with him. Give that dream up, dear.

I never trust the “professional movie critics” I will go and see whatever movie I want. I have found what they say is totally opposite of what my oppinion is after I have seen a movie. I have read the book and seen a preview at this point. Can I say that Rob’s Remember me was the most moving movie I have ever seen. I am not a Rob fan per say. I am a “Twilight Fan” but not because of Rob. But because of Stephanie Meyer. I LOVE READING the books. I go to see the movies to put a more visual effect to the books that I can read over and over. If people would just watch “Remember me” they would see that he really can act. OMG, I cried so hard at the end of that movie. I rented it not knowing anything about it at all. Now, had they promoted that movie as one story from nine eleven and not just that Rob was in it, it would have done a whole lot better. My mother who is 69 years old even loved that movie. So, even though I am not a big Robert Pattinson fan, he can act. He is not a stiff board. So he has played a character in “Harry Potter” and “Twilight”. Big deal. He could do just about anything if that is what he wants and feels like doing. I will post again tomorrow after I see “Water for Elephants”. But, I doubt my response will be anything different. I am like Reese Witherspoon, if you have bad hygene, leave me alone. Anyhow, enough of that. When I see the movie, I will give my .02 worth. I loved the book. Let me see how the movie is.

The crazies over at E-online have been predicting an Oscar for him for this. Perhaps not as well founded a belief as they would like it to be. I saw the first Twilight with my daughter and for the others, I dropped her off at the mall with her friends. My head ached too badly from the combined flat out dreadfulness of the two leads to risk further exposure.

WSell, I think Rob is a pretty sucky actor, but I want to see the movie anyway because it looks really good despite the fact that he will be in it. Aso, the book was great and I love the circus. And I’ve learned not to really listen critics because while they hate most of the movies I end up loving, they love movies I end up hating, like The King’s Speech and The Black Swan and other such “award-winning” films.

If I remember correctly…Rob did not get great reviews from “the critics” with the Twilight Movies either; but we fans literally ate them up,licked our lips afterwards and are still begging for more. How does a movie critic know what I like and what appeal to someone such as me? Especially, if they are some know it all, want a be, fame envious, heartless jerk? We have nothing in common and I know this. That is why I NEVER pay attention to movie reviews. I have a brain and I can decide for myself.

The proof is in the box office results this weekend. Those of you that posted on her are die hard R-Pattz fans who believe he should get an Oscar for reading the phone book. This is make or break for this guy. He has to prove he can get people that are not Twi hards or sexually frustrated females to plunk down the $12 to see this movie. If this thing bombs, or it makes decent BO mostly from Twilight fans it doesn’t bode well. Twi hards eventually grow up and move on. Who’s left? I will be interested in the demographic breakdown of the people who see it this weekend. BTW, being Easter weekend there will be competition at the multiplex; and that will really be the acid test of RP’s star power.

I wish actors would comment on this movie, not the frumpy snobs that think they know everything about acting. Yeah he’s new (according to the shelve life of actoting). I know that their are plenty of fans that are going to see this movie reguardless of what these so called critics say. After all is said and done we all know that it BOX OFFICE $$$ that count. Not the oppinion of boring critics. I believe that they come on strong when they are challenged by the box office $$$$. And we all know that is what is what matters. C’MON critics give th new guy on the block some credit for what he has ACHIEVED. Not many can stay on board for the full ride. Let’s see where yje numbers go, I think the guy deserves a chance. And yeah, not perfect, but he really is here to stay for awhle. :):)
