'Glee' Recap — Charice, Gwyneth Paltrow & Naya Rivera Steal The Show!

Wed, April 20, 2011 6:41am EST by 31 Comments

Sure, Sue tried to destroy the glee club for the umpteenth time (new plot line guys?), but the supporting cast got their chance to shine!

No matter what complaints people may have about Glee, no show better utilizes their entire cast. Every single actor on Glee gets their chance to shine, however briefly, and this episode proved it.

Let’s start with the best part of the episode — and no offense to the very talented Chris Colfer and Lea Michele — it was wonderful to have all the normal Glee players relatively quiet this week. That does not however mean the supporting players were utilized to the best of their abilities, but hey, it’s a start.

The biggest atrocity, much like the premiere episode, was the inability of the show to do something with the insanely talented Charice. She shows up, sings the heck out of a song, and suddenly poof … she’s gone. See you soon?

Gwyneth Paltrow was also back this week, redeeming her somewhat weak second guest appearance, by organizing the funny, albeit comically obvious, “Night of Neglect.” The problem is, and I really do love Gwyneth on Glee, every time I see her on screen part of me pines to see Kristin Chenoweth back; an actor who, thanks to her schedule or the wisdom of the producers, actually spreads out her appearances.

That being said, Gwyn sounded her best ever covering Adele. Of all the songs she has performed this season, none were as hard to nail as “Turning Tables,” and she did an amazing job. What’s better, it was great to see the show cover a contemporary artist whose talent takes precedent over their public image.

Now for the MVP of the week, reclaiming her crown yet again — Naya Rivera. I mean, does this girl have a film booked this summer? She, along with feline fact phenom Heather Morris, has been flawless this season. Though her scene with Max Adler was brief, over his heckling of Chris, she manages to bring far more to her role then is on the page. And she’s Lima Heights adjacent.

It was business as usual beyond that. Amber Riley sounded amazing, hijinks ensued and Gwyneth left in a manner that allowed for a next season return.

So HollywoodLifers, who was your Glee MVP?
GET MORE ON ‘GLEE!’

  1. THE WARBLERS PERFORM ON ‘TODAY’ — AND SOUND AWFUL!
  2. CHARICE FINALLY RETURNS TO ‘GLEE!’
  3. LEA MICHELE TURNS INTO A MEAN GIRL — AGAIN!

If I have millions of dollars, I would like to revive a the movie the fang myth and call it “The White Fang part3″ a movie about the legend of the white wolf where the old Indian tribes believe will save them. I will hire Charice and Naya Rivera to play indian sisters. While Zac Efron and Nick Jonas will be their saviour. How romantic that will be.

Something ia amiss in the plots currently running GLEE’

So many subplots are running simultaneously that my children are already confused.

Why do I get the feeling that an overdose of GAY settings are being peddled. Is there a campaign on?

Has to be a FAMILY show ,perod. We want to have more true tested singers. Forget auto tune. Some sound so different outside the studio . Sucks !

Yes, atrocious indeed that Charice’s comeback was FLEETING! What a tease, but enough to leave us wanting more of Sunshine! I used to be more of a Gleek than a Chaster, but now much more of a Chaster than I was ever a Gleek =)

Her acting has greatly improved, singing still superb, though it was indeed toned down perhaps to make her less of a pro to fit Sunshine’s amateurish character.

Glee must catch up to this amazing talent. Please give her the storyline and character development she so deserves, as do Tina, Will and Mike–finally, he got to showcase his dance moves(though the camera was dizzying!)! I agree–focus more on the cast than the guests so as not to sacrifice the plot.

The segues to the performances feel much more contrived and forced than the first season’s. So many things went right then that are now going wrong.

Thanks!

The article says that everyone got a chance to shine, yet Tina was yet again shafted. I think she’s only ever performed one whole song. It’s like they’re using her simply to make the other characters look better. The only redeeming thing about her performance is that they released her amazing cover of I Follow Rivers.

There were some good aspects though. Mike’s dancing was awesome, Mercedes got a good role again, Santana was awesome as usual, and Lauren made me laugh.

A very nice episode 17 !

So many performers and stars ! Who stole the show was a big question amongst bloggers as a result . No need for arguments really. Just see who is trending in the entertainment sites.

I suspect Charice it is.

Charice sang All By Myself in this Glee episode like no other and yet I agree with some who think that her rendition was toned down/subdued to fit the show; that is, her best rendition so far was in Hitman Returns in Mandalay Bay last October.

But Charice, the extraordinary singer, was a SCENE STEALER alright, and as a beginning actress, was VERY EFFECTIVE IN HER ROLE AS SUNSHINE otherwise none of these positive – and negative – comments here and in many other reviews would have cited her appearance in this episode. So, keep going, Charice, you’re doing great!

I am a Charice Chaster.

Its good to get bearings and the reality of things.
Charice is in Glee because of her superior singing capabilities. Today, Ryan has positioned her to bring in the 28-88 age group including the potential 2 billion or so additional audience from Asia . Clearly an enlightened commercial decision.

Asia will have its superstar ! Charice is nearest to that discription today. For all her strenghts and weaknesses , she brings in the goods.

Sans all the struggles , the pointed practiced biases ,
she is my hero. What tenacity! Just read her story and cry like a baby !

Really not hating but she really can not act.

She does not need to be on the show after her little stint is up.

Stick to singing Charice.

Star, Santana and Harry. Props to Amber she is improving in her acting and her scene with Rachel was her best dramatic acting yet and of course Lea nailed it too.

Why do Charice fans think by throwing out a you tube video that means anything. She can’t act, her delivery was horrible. A video doesn’t change that.

She is sweet, she can sing but she CAN NOT act.

Come on stop fan girking for Chairce, her character was pretty pointless and while she sang the song well I was thinking this is really long.

Jenna should have gotten the chance to actually sing instead of Charice.

Neither Charice nor Gwenth stole the show.

Santana yes and Mercedes/Rachel car scene and Harry dancing stoel the show.

Charice, of course. the producers and directors of Glee gave her a small part, but she almost stole the show! Now what does it tells us with this petite, talented little girl. She came, sang and gave us all goosebumps and then she´s gone again. She´s pretty busy working with Bruno Mars, Nick Jonas, Greyson Chance and former AI judge Kara Dioguardi aside making movies. My guess she may appear soon in Ellen De Generes show. Remember Ellen is Greyson Chances producer.

Nice article about the absolutely GREAT cast of Glee – let me plug Mike Chang who was again outstanding too!
.
Charice made a great Brainiac because she is one in real life.
.
Puck showed some emotion – maybe Charice’s biggest achievement yet :-)
