Kirstin On 'Idol:' Thank Goodness We Didn't Lose One Of The Last Two Girls!

After narrowly escaping elimination, Haley Reinhart and Stefano Langone, were safe — leaving Paul McDonald to sing his swan song. Were YOU disappointed?

He was the leader of the pack and the oldest contestant remaining on Season 10 of American Idol, but Paul McDonald received the lowest number of votes from America and was eliminated from the show April 14 — and it didn’t seem like anyone was too surprised.

The 26-year-old Rod Stewart-esque character didn’t win over the crowd with his rendition of “Old Time Rock and Roll” the night before. Even though the judges failed to point it out, his performance was pitchy and weak compared to the rest, who barely missed a note.

I doubt this is the last we’ll see of Paul. His band back home — The Grand Magnolias — has shot up the iTunes charts since he’s been on Idol. Plus, singing his own songs (versus covers) is his passion, so he’ll be stoked to be on his own for a bit…at least until the tour starts!

Now only seven remain on Idol. Who do YOU think will be the next to go? Sound off below!

I don’t know who this Chloe Melas is, but she knows less than nothing about music. Why would she make statements about Paul’s abilities when she is obviously uneducated and unqualified to make such judgmental statements? It doesn’t matter what has been said about Paul and to whom he’s been compared; the fact is that he is an exceptionally poor singer who cannot even begin to approximate correct pitch. American Idol has become a popularity contest, PERIOD. The transition has been gradual over the past few years. Competing singers used to be exceptional musicians with formidable vocal ability; singers on the current show are rank amateurs who wouldn’t have lasted more than a week if Simon and Paula were still on the show. Elton John refused to work with the contestants this season due to their lack of ability and talent!!! Furthermore, I am AMAZED at the level of musical ignorance demonstrated by the judges this season. It’s positively STAGGERING to realize how little they know. Talk to any educated musician if you doubt the veracity of this fact. Also, the egos of the remaining contestants, with the exception of the struggling Stefano, are absolutely unbelievable. Without all the backup singers, fabulous band and superb stage effects, these kids would be NOTHING — they are not singers!!! And if anyone truly cared about James, they would have STRONGLY advised him against being high-handed with the frustrated musician, Jimmy; James has already proven that, even in his complete lack of experience in the business, he will be impossible to work with — and attitude like his does NOT fly in this business unless you’re an established LEGEND. People believe what they want to believe, but the truth lives. Long story short, Chloe Melas should understand that Paul is loved by many, MANY fans in the Idol audience, but he is NOT a good musician, and he is a MISERABLE vocalist, regardless of how much you may like his performing. Yeeeeesh.

the judges have compared paul to bob dylan and willie nelson, neither of whom were known for their vocal prowess. i think they understood paul all right… they liked him for whatever je ne sais quoi he has, his personal style. also, the show has ALWAYS been a popularity contest, from day one. this has not changed, and in fact, the judges being able to reel things in a touch and take things back from the voters was a RECENT change that contradicts your theory. as for the abilities of the singers on this season’s show, and elton’s so-called refusal to sing specifically with any of them, you are sorely mistaken. elton turned down being a judge b/c he hates tv and singing contests. if he hates the contests so much, i highly doubt that he has watched enough to pass judgment on these singers in the way you have suggested. and as far as “frustrated musician[s]” go, i think you need to look no further than the mirror, is my guess… let me guess, rejected contestant? your bitterness is ugly, to say the least.

tho i would presume it will be haley and stefano in the next two weeks- flip a coin over who goes first, i think we still could have some shocks ahead of us. i always wonder if jacob can keep america’s attention (or irritate them if he gets too “holier than thou”), despite his huge talent. and i think casey is a little too quirky for the teens, too. so, either of them could be a surprise… or, really, scotty- if america realizes he isn’t vocally up to par with some of the rest of them. i mean, he really does have a lot of vocal weaknesses, as adorable as he is, and as phenomal as his low notes are. singing next to lauren, it’s striking how effortless (sorry to be redundant, but that really is the epitome of her vocal talent- effortless) she can put things out there- and he was struggling to show some range. in any case, if i were a betting person, you’d have haley and stefano leaving in the next two weeks (love him, but hopefully stefano first), casey after that… i put 2/3 of jacob, lauren and scotty in the finals. honestly, i do think scotty should switch places with casey in that scenario- but i don’t think mainstream america will agree. we’ll see. regardless, it’s a fun season b/c the kids are so talented and diverse. last but not least, i really do think haley kicks @ss and deserves a little more attention, but america doesn’t seem to agree. sometimes she is a little mediocre-ish, but other times she is downright fabulous and untouchable (e.g., last night with casey).

Stefano should really go next. He should have gone instead of Pia last week. He’s never been the show’s best singer, and he sang his own swan song when he sang, “End of the Road.” So, I hope Stefano goes next.

yah, sad, but true. i think he has star quality though. i think he needs to work on his vocals though b/c even though they raved over his performance last week, i thought it sounded VERY bad… but he’s so darn cute and his personality is even cuter. i think with some work on his vocals, he could really be a huge star. girls would love him, with a little more work on his “singing to the audience”.
