Miley Cyrus: I'm Not Trying To Shock You -- I'm Just Growing Up!

Miley has gotten serious heat for her scantily clad outfits and outrageous behavior. But she says she’s not trying to make a ‘statement’!

Miley Cyrus isn’t making excuses anymore! The 18-year-old appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show April 13 to perform with rock legend Joan Jett. When asked by Oprah if it’s been hard to stray from her picture-perfect Disney image, Miley didn’t hold back!

“It’s not about how far I can push things so people will believe I’m not Hannah Montana anymore,” Miley says. “You just make the music that you love and because I’m growing up, you know, so does my music. It’s not about trying to make a statement about growing up. You know … you just do.”

Evidently making out with girls on stage, and smoking salvia was just Miley coming into her own.

If she really wanted to act “grown up” then what she should have done is respectively bring hannah montana to an end. take on some more movies rolls. preform with class on stage. actaully be a role model. everyone is entitled to mistakes but seriously if you have so many people frowning on you then wow. rethink your steps. You shouldnt have to keep telling everyone that yes i am growing up all the time. If the public eye actually thinks you are growing then they would not be commenting saying you have gone bad.

I love how the main defense is for miley is leave her alone. teenagers do crazy stuff. well teenagers drink and get into a car and get into a car accident finding themselves killed or seriously hurt. i guess you can consider that crazy. Or teenagers getting high out of their mind and do something stupid like doing a life threatening stunt. lets face it the crazy things teenagers do are not actually smart. so dont say she is a teenager and they do crazy things. because that is the worst excuse i have heard

Miley never made out with girls on stage! she put her face near a girls face they were not kissing! And i deffinately dont think miley does it to make a statemen, why would she do that, she doesnt want to get more crap from the media. Shes just growing up and if she makes mistakes who cares, who doesnt? The only difference is that shes in the public eye.

I hate to break it to you but dressing skimpy or doing bong or what ever does not make you grow up. It actaully looks really bad on your part.

There’s nothing wrong with wearing revealing outfits. She has the right to wear whatever she wants. Lady Gaga, Rihana, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and other pop stars wear lots of provocative outfits. It’s normal for pop stars to wear whatever they want. It shouldn’t be considered outrageous or scandalous for Miley Cyrus to wear short shorts, or belly shirts, or body suits, thigh-high boots, or any other sexy clothing.

and look how much respect those girls are getting. They may be successful but i honestly dont have respect for women or men who has to wear revealing clothes to get attention. Their music should be what everyone is focusing on.

People have the right to dress however they want. Clothing is a matter of personal choice and people shouldn’t be condemned or disrespected just because they like a certain style of clothing. Those who choose to be nasty to or disrespect people just because of how they dress are shallow, narrow-minded, and immature. This is the 21st century. People shouldn’t be required to dress modestly all the time.

I think everyone has done what she did but she is famous and she chose for this she is not only a role model for little girls but she is a role model for girls of her age I don’t say that she can’t do what did she just has to watch out for paparazzi

Most people who are at Miley’s age are now in college. No matter what college you go in the world, you will encounter the same behavior what the young Hollywood do. Students smoke, do drugs, drink, party, have sex, while they are in college. Those bad influences would go away after you graduate college and leave the dorm. So what were you doing when you were in college?

Um yeah i do believe her.
Im 18 years old, and when i party i wear skimpy outfits coz i like to feel sexy, and sometimes ill smoke a bong or two to relax. Sure its not what EVERY single teenager does, but its a pretty big majority of them.
The only difference between my antics and Mileys is that she is constantly in the public eye, and is scrutinized for everything she does by negative people like you. No doubt, even if Miley stayed in her “good girl, Hannah Montana” look, you would complain that she is fake.

@Chloe Melas, every time you go negative against Miley Cyrus, you seem to always fall flat on your face! This time is no exception. Miley and Joan gave a stupendous performance on Oprah, and all you can think to write about is the normal teenage stuff she’s done in the past. When you contrast what she’s done to what Joan and the rest of the Runaways had done by the time they were her age, it really makes the point that you guys at HollywoodLife are picking on Miley Cyrus in a really unfair way.

I think Miley doesn’t do it on purpose she’s still a kid in my eyes and her salvia or outfits are just things girls her age do. I sure remember doing them but at an actually younger age. All kids are going to rebel in those ways but unfortunately hers is on magazines and gossip sites. She’s gonna make mistakes everyone does.

i sort of believe her, more or less. i mean, as teen girls grow up, part of what they are doing is trying to prove they’re adults or mature, and trying to take control of their evolving sexuality- but it often is a ‘public statement’. so, i believe miley that she’s not doing anything other than the typical teen girl does when they’re growing up- trying to prove to the adult world that they deserve acceptance up on the porch with the big kids. (mixed metaphor, i know.) so, she’s not doing something necessarily contrived solely b/c she’s ‘hannah montana’… so i get that.
