Sadly, the child’s own mother participated as well, dousing her daughter in rum before lighting her on fire. Truly horrific.
Sylvenie Thessier, 71, of Queens, NY, was sentenced to three years in jail after pleading guilty to reckless endangerment. The grandmother, along with the child’s mother, Marie Lauradin, severely burned her 6-year-old granddaughter, Frantzcia, during a voodoo ritual attempting to rid the girl of evil spirits. Very disturbing.
Prosecutors say Marie sprayed her daughter with rum and set her on fire in June 2009 because she believed the child was possessed by evil.
After the ritual, Sylvenie, a native of Haiti, doused her granddaughter with water to extinguish the flames and then put her to bed without seeking any medical help.
The judge, Justice Richard Buchter told Sylvenie at her hearing, “That child deserved to be cared for and deserved to have her wounds treated.”
Marie, the girl’s mother, is scheduled to head to trial for charges of assault and endangering the welfare of a minor. Just terrible.
