Lorena On Grey's Anatomy: Meredith And Derek Should Make Their Marriage Official!

New Grey’s Anatomy spoilers hint that Meredith and Derek may finally get married for real in this year’s season finale.

Meredith and Derek’s Post-It Note wedding on Grey’s Anatomy in 2009 left many Mer/Der fans torn. Some were pleased that the couple didn’t have a traditional big white wedding. Others, myself included, felt gypped. Usually I am right there with Shonda Rhimes. I didn’t scream in rage about bringing back Denny, I didn’t get upset about Izzie leaving, and I was entertained, not angry, about last week’s musical episode. But Meredith and Derek’s Post-It Note vows annoyed me. So imagine my excitement when I heard their marriage might be made legal!

I’m not one to buy into the whole “couples have to get married” thing. In fact, my thoughts on marriage as an institution are complicated and at times negative, but that is neither here nor there. I didn’t like the Post-It Note marriage because it felt less like Meredith and Derek were taking a stance on traditional marriages and more like they didn’t have time in their busy schedules to go to the courthouse and thus justified writing their thoughts on a sticky note in true Berger-dumps-Carrie style. It was a non-marriage of convenience.

Shonda tried to explain otherwise, saying “I felt like Meredith and Derek’s choice to be together becomes a marriage of equals as opposed to some faux fairy tale. And while I love a good wedding, I felt like for Meredith, it was so counter to who she is as a human being. And I love the fact that Derek doesn’t need her to do it. I get why the fans want it; I’d probably want it too if I was just watching. But I literally feel sick every time I think about Meredith in a big white poufy dress.”

Okay, so have her wear jeans. And if you get why the fans would want it, and you would too if you were “just watching” then why wouldn’t you give it to us? 99% of us fans are “just watching” Grey’s Anatomy and not writing it. It really didn’t feel like a big “marriage of equals” moment, it felt more like a “phew, now that is crossed off our to-do list.”

Last week when Arizona sat at Callie’s bedside, worrying that she was “nothing” even though she “felt like Callie’s wife”, she was addressing a problem Derek could potentially have with Meredith in the future, especially with the possibility she has Alzheimer’s. Obviously Callie and Arizona have much more to deal with when you factor in the lack of equal marriage rights in all states, which was recently addressed a few episodes ago when the newlywed males came in after one was attacked by horses. But right now, Derek and Meredith’s Post-It has no legal binding and that could be harmful should one fall ill.

Our sister site TVLine.com reports (spoiler!) that during Callie and Arizona’s wedding filming, Meredith and Derek seemed to be conspicuously absent, and could be partaking in their own official ceremony! Would that make you happy, or are you satisfied with a Post-It Note?
