How do you feel about drinking a beer while breastfeeding? This group of moms thinks it’s great!
Brooklyn moms, who’ve nicknamed themselves “Brews and Babies,” believe in the old wives’ tale that beer increases milk production, so they meet regularly at a local bar to drink beer, talk, and burp their babies. Bethenny Frankel would love this! But do YOU think this is OK?
New mom Netta Rosenman started the first meet-up at Bar Great Harry, where “sixteen new moms with babies between 3 weeks and 3 months stormed the bar decked out in Baby Bjorns and pushing bassinet strollers,” fellow beer-drinking mama Needu Taha tells The Stir. “Most of the babies slept. Others nursed at their moms’ breasts. All of us drank beer. We regaled one another with birth stories, poop stories, and bonded over sleep-deprived nights.”
Since then, a small group of ladies — those who have not returned to their full-time jobs — meet at a bar called The Brazen Head once a week to throw back a pint. “Don’t call social services on us just yet,” Needu explains. “Our group’s beer drinking forays are always carried out with our babies’ best interests in mind. In other words, none of us are doing bar slides or belly shots. In fact, typically, no mom has more than one beer.”
So HollyMoms, how do you feel about this? Would you join the “Brews and Babies” for a beer or does this bother you?

I thought it was an old Wives tale too, but I did a little research and it seems to be true! There’s a lot of research out there showing positive results, or neutral results at worst. There’s also lots of data out there showing the rate of transfer of chemicals through breast milk to the child, and alcohol isn’t red-flagged. (Heck, they prescribe heavy pain-killers after birth and nobody worries about that.)
If you’re really nervous, non-alcoholic beer will also do the trick.
