The little boy picked up the loaded pistol in his home, thinking it was a toy gun.
This story proves that guns should never be in reach of young children. After finding a loaded gun in his home, 4-year-old Tyeshawn Townsend of Baltimore, Maryland accidentally fired one shot into his face and died from his injuries. Tragic.
“I heard the gunshot, 10:30 or something like that.,” neighbor Hazel Lindsey says. “I heard this woman scream loudly, in pain, she was really crying, screaming.” The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 20. Investigators are still unsure if Tyeshawn and his mother lived in the house with the gun or were just visiting.
Tyeshawn was taken to Sinai Hospital and then Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died. Police recovered the gun, but they do not yet know if it is registered or if it was involved in other crimes around the area.
“We’re still looking at the circumstances of the shooting,” police spokesman Jeremy Silbert says, with fellow investigator Anthony Guglielmi adding, “We want to know where this gun came from. How did the kid get it, how does a 4-year-old find a gun in a house. Whose was it?”
Definitely a scary situation. Guns should never be kept out in the open, especially when there are small children in the home. Or maybe not in your house at all?
