Kirstin Says: Karen Didn't Deserve To Be Kicked Off 'Idol' — We Sent The Wrong Gal Home!

Thu, March 17, 2011 10:35pm EDT by 20 Comments

I don’t know what America’s smoking, but Karen Rodriguez is WAY better than Naima Adedapo!

Boy, am I naive. I was actually beginning to think I’d go through season 10 of American Idol without any heart break. We’d gotten through the Top 12 so well, I thought my picks were on fire — but unfortunately, I was mistaken.

It is with a sad, sad heart I report Karen Rodriguez got the boot from the competition March 17. Haley Reinhart and Naima Adedapo were the other two in the bottom three. It’s no secret who I wanted to see go home tonight. Naima, 26, has consistently underwhelmed the judges the last two weeks and doesn’t have the singing chops compared to her competition.

Karen, on the other hand, hasn’t had the best couple of weeks, but her creative rendition of Mariah Carey‘s’ “Hero” will always stick with me as a standout performance. I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way about Miss Rodriguez — Randy admitted it wasn’t a unanimous vote between the judges to not use the save, which means Jennifer Lopez wanted to keep her around for a bit too.

As I write this, I’m already starting to simmer down. After all, my favorites — Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina — are still holding strong.

Did tonight’s results show shock you as much as it did me or were you glad to see Karen get the boot? Who do you think is going to be the final three? Let’s start placing some bets!

P.S. I’m re-listening to the single recordings now. How much fun would it be to go karaoke singing with Lauren? She knows all the best country songs and would bring a dive bar house down!

Howcome it’s ok for a latino to sing in English on a Spanish singing competition without latinos complaining, and I have seen this a lot on spanish tv..they don’t care. Maybe latinos should start applying the same rule and not allow anybody to sing in English on their spanish competitions.

I agree with Ros as to her slyly but unsuccessfully raising a “racial” issue. I think Karen is typical of those who use the cultural piece when it suits them…..she is either white or Hispanic when it suits her purpose. Her whole demeanor was arrogant and who remembers a few weeks ago when she gave the eye to eye sign with literally her eyes and figuratively with her fingers. If was if she possibly had it sewn up because of J LO. Yes, she can sign but the whole picture is diminished with her presence and attitude.

I think that Naima should have gone home last night. Karen is not one of the top Idols this year but I believe she was better than Naima. Some of my favorites are James, Pia, and Casey. I like Paul’s uniqueness and like him too. Now Scotty, you look at him and then he sings…it just blows you away. Its hard to believe that voice could come from him.

Why do you think Paul should go to the top?

I agree with you Kirstin. Karen did not deserve to go yet. She was good and so likeable. But then again, maybe not. After reading the comments on this board I see that many people did not like her singing in Spanish. It never occured to me that it would be percieved as offensive. I guess I can see both sides on this issue. Too bad though if that’s what got her kicked off :(

I have seen Karen since audition and to be honest I think she´s creating a racial issue. She has a nice voice, she is pretty and she is proud to be latino. That´s nice, but keeps making a statement like “it´s about time that latino should stay” will just create racial tension. She should keep in mind, this is an American idol contest for all people in America who feel american, and not only for contestants with latino heritage. Otherwise she can go back to her country and join their local contest.

I am so glad Karen went home. Why did she always have to sing in Spanish and English? I am an Italian American singer, and I don’t change the lyrics to songs. I know that most people would NOT understand the Italian words. It’s not polite to do that. If the show were not American Idol and instead in a Spanish speaking country, then it would be fine. But this is America. Speak English.

This morning I asked several people their opinion of who was going home tonight. I got the same answer for the same reasons. “Karen – because the show is AMERICAN Idol.” Right or wrong, it is reality. It is simply a matter of demographics and obviously the hispanic population are not big Idol watchers. While her ethnicity in an of itself was not a factor, those I talked to were actually offended that she felt it necessary to SING in spanish which they and apparently, a majority of the 20-25 million viewers (or voters) do not understand. She could have gotten away with a one time language change but the repetition made them feel force fed. Her voice, itself, had very little to do with her elimination. I feel, had she simply kept to english she would have gone much farther in the show. Not a politically correct post but honest from my observation. Not that it matters, but I am still trying to figure out what language Casey and Paul were singing this week. They were pretty much train wrecks. At least Karen wasn’t pitchy dawg and she enunciated in both languages.

I’m with you Connie! I do not see anything redeeming about Paul. I do however like Casey. He has so much musical talent. Unfortunately with the song he performed this week it was hard to hear.

I agree with you about Paul — he’s not versatile enough. However, Casey is an amazing talent; he just didn’t show it off this week.

In his defense though, he had a hard time picking his song this week. When we chatted with him backstage, he said all the songs he wanted, he couldn’t get cleared. He sang Nirvana because he couldn’t find anything else.

Thanks for the insight…I couldn’t figure out why Casey sang the song he did. He’s so good though – even when singing music I don’t care for! Can’t wait to see more of him.

She totally deserved to go home. The spanish/english stuff did not work. THIS IS AMERICAN IDOL NOT HISPANIC IDOL. She can take her copied routines and clothes and go home with them….she didn’t even deserve to be in the top 12.

It was my greatest wish this year that AI would only have great voices on the show and that the American Public would vote this way for the first time since Season II.

I can see now that is not going to happen. How could anyone vote for Paul or Casey Abrams? Neither one can sing for beans, especially Abrams. He is the most terrible contestant I have ever had the displeasure of listening to!

Karen has the best voice and proved it with her rendition of Heroes. She should not have gone home this evening, Abrams should have.

My 5 favorites for the Finals are: Pia, James, Casey, Scotty, and Jacob, with Pia probably the best of them.

I agree about Naima. she’s just not very good. Also, The Hero song Karen sang was by Mariah Carey, not Enrique.

Kirstin, how do you expect anyone to take anything serious here, when at the top of your page there’s an article title of this “Suri Cruise Eats Penis Shaped Gummies” I mean really…
