The March 14 episode of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ confirmed what we already knew: Everyone in Rosewood is pretty… and a liar!
If I’ve learned one thing from watching The Vampire Diaries, it’s that no good can come of a Founder’s Day celebration — and it turns out the same rule applies to Pretty Little Liars‘ picture-perfect Rosewood. It was a night of exposed secrets, new temptations, broken hearts. Oh, and one psycho brother-in-law wielding a crowbar.
Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb’s (Tyler Blackburn) roller coaster of a relationship nosedived pretty hard this week, maybe to the point of no repair. Caleb, oddly, was one of the only honest characters this week as he tried — unsuccessfully — to get a note to Hanna before he took for Arizona. And although we didn’t really get to see the note before that little troll Mona (Janel Parrish) ripped it up, the words “I love you” and “call me” were visible. Not a bad sign.
Meanwhile, Aria (Lucy Hale) discovered that Ezra’s (Ian Harding) been keeping his own secrets about his past. Turns out, he was once engaged to his college sweetheart, but she decided she couldn’t go through with a wedding. Once Ezra came clean about his prenuptial past, he and Aria took their first official photo together — of course, they were both wearing paper bags on their heads. But it was still kind of nice.
Their parade was quickly rained upon, however, as Ezra received a visit later that night from that no-good Officer Garrett (Yani Gellman.) He’s been keeping a close eye on Aria for the past few weeks, so needless to say, he knows about her extracurricular/statutory activities. And yes, that shot of Ezra at the end of the episode was definitely his “oh s**t, I’m going to jail” face.
Speaking of Garrett, I’d like to point something out: I never trusted him. And not just because he was introduced suspiciously close to the season finale. I also had my doubts about him because Yani Gellman also played evil popstar Paolo Valisari in The Lizzie McGuire Movie. And once you’ve done Hilary Duff wrong, you’re a villain in my book.
Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Paige’s (Lindsey Shaw) secret relationship took another detour this week, as a new girl entered the picture, making it an official love triangle. And it doesn’t look like Paige stands a chance, as girl #3 is mature, pretty, and most importantly for Emily, openly gay. (Side note: Why has Maya [Bianca Lawson] not come back yet? Seriously, now.)
Meanwhile, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) confirmed her suspicions that Melissa (Torrey Devitto) and Ian (Ryan Merriman) were lying to everyone — including the police — about their little trip to Hilton Head. But just when I was ready to point a mighty finger of blame in Ian’s direction, he came to Spencer’s rescue at the Founder’s Day festival. “A” stuck a crowbar in a funhouse door, trapping Spencer inside, and I was pretty surprised to see Ian filling the role of Spencer’s Knight in Guilty Murderous Armor.
The episode ended with the girls, key finally in hand, opening up Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) storage unit and discovering — dum dum DUM — another flash drive. This one has even more creepy candid footage of the girls, which brings us to the final question we hope to have answered on next week’s season finale: Who the hell has been filming these girls?!
