She tells ‘Good Morning America’ she’s totally shaken by the Japanese tragedy since she nearly died in a tsunami herself!
The tragedy hits especially close to home for Petra, 31, since she was seriously injured in a 2004 tsunami in Thailand. The wave left her with a shattered pelvis, struggling for survival, while her fiancé Simon Atlee was swept away in the aftermath.
“The power [of the wave] is so enormous, you feel powerless,” Petra told Good Morning America on March 14. “The more you fight, the more you lose energy for survival.”
Petra was so upset by the tragedy she almost opted out of competing on DWTS to help out hands-on, sources tell the New York Post. She has assisted the efforts of those struggling since the Thai tsunami through the help of her Happy Hearts Foundation, which focus efforts on children in the region. She wanted to help similarly in Japan, but decided to go through with the show, determining she could raise more awareness to the effort with a national television platform.
“I do think that we can overcome adversity if we strive to make something good out of a difficult situation,” Petra tells GMA. “We can learn something.”
How incredible that she can be so compassionate to those in need!
