A 19-year-old Brooklyn mom was arrested in the gruesome death of New York City’s “tiniest murder victim—her brother’s pet hamster, Sweetie,” according to the New York Post. Monique Davis allegedly squeezed little Sweetie in a fit of anger, then killed her by throwing her hard to the floor twice in the family’s home.
The hamster survived the first throw to the floor, and though badly hurt she tried to crawl away, sources close to the family told The Post. When Monique saw that Sweetie was still alive, she picked her up and slammed her down again, delivering the fatal blow to the poor animal. She then took the dead carcass outside and tossed it on the ground in front of her 9-year-old brother, Brandon, who was sitting on the front stoop with his family.
Little Brandon called the ASPCA help line that day.
Monique, one of twelve children, has been charged with felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty and endangering the welfare of a child. Her mother, Theresa Smith, told The Post that Monique killed Sweetie as an act of revenge. Theresa is also upset with authorities for arresting Monique, who has a two-month-old baby. “She’s a new mother, and I’m taking care of her baby.” Do you think the authorities’ reaction was too harsh?
