11-Yr-Old Girl Gives Birth And Makes Her Mom The World's Youngest Grandma At 23!

Mon, March 7, 2011 2:17pm EDT by 79 Comments

iStockRifca Stanescu gave birth to her daughter Maria when she was only 13! And now at 12, Maria is a mother to a 2-year-old boy.

Despite Rifca Stanescu‘s pleas for her daughter Maria to stay in school, the 11-year-old girl ran away, got married and got pregnant with her husband’s baby. That’s right, she was only 11! But the thing is, Rifca, a gypsy from Investi, Romania, was in a similar situation at age 13 when she became pregnant with Maria. History repeats itself.

At the age of 11, Rifca ran away with her now husband Ionel, who was only 13 at the time. The pair got married and concieved Maria, who is now a young mother herself to 2-year-old, Ion. “I am happy to be a grandmother but I wished something else for Maria – and something else for me.,” Rifca tells the The Sun. “Ion is a good boy – and he is already engaged to a girl aged 8. Boys are always good to have – they don’t have to suffer as much girls I think.’

Already engaged? Seems weird right, but in Romanian gypsy culture that’s normal. Rifca was promised to be married to someone else at the age of two, but once she met Ionel, she denied her family’s wishes and ran away with him. “I wanted to marry him, so I agreed, and of course after we had spent the night together then there was no way anyone could separate us,” Rifca explains.

In gypsy culture, virginity is greatly prized and girls marry young so that their new husbands are assured they are virgins. If a woman loses her virginity before marriage, the deal is off. After Maria’s birth, Ionel’s family paid Rifca’s father a dowry and so that everything could be settled.

So when Maria decided at the age of 11 to get married, Rifca couldn’t really do anything about it. “I did not try to stop my daughter getting married because this is the tradition,” she says, “it’s what happens.”

What do you think of all this, HollyMoms? Interesting, right?

please, dont be so ignorant. Our culture is one of the few that conceives of childhood from 0-18 years of age. in the majority of other cultures 11 and 13 are considered grown and marriage or sex are inevitable. You are so upset and angered because you see the 11yr old in terms of your own cultural experience and want her to be recognized as a child…she isnt in her culture. With that being said, being angry doesnt change anything. Such cultures almost always benefit men at the expense of women and one way to improve this would be to offer social services to the community that would assist girls that do not want arranged marriages or children at a young age. this could assist such women in making change rather than demeaning their way of life with our superiority complex and making them less likely to seek help from us.

Wat the hell is going on here why the hell would anyone want to have a kid at the age of 11, kids are hard to take care of its not all cotton candy and bubblegum. I just have pity on her daughter, i do wish her the best of luck though because like i said before kids are hard to handle especially if your 11 yrs old and ran away.

You can not ever change someones tradition, really?

So I guess burning witches on stakes because they have red hair, sacrificing children on the altar of gods, making a rape victim marry the rapist, enslaving people because of different skin colour and religion and other ‘traditions’ are still alive and kicking in the european and american lifestyle?

Traditions are not something like breathing or the need for food..you can change traditions and traditions changed since the beginning of humankind.

because we are in a different culture.. you’re not a gypsy who was raised by a 13-year old mother. i’m sure you’d feel differently if it were more accepted in our culture.

“Hollybaby” you got your math wrong. Under the caption you say a 13 year old gave birth and had a 2 year old at 12 years old. You’re ALWAYS screwing up your headlines and spelling! You need to go to journalism school.

This is their culture. We can’t force them to change it. At least she was allowed to chase her dreams even though we may not agree with her choices.

Still very sad to see that most people in their culture are not given free will.

These people are SICK. She’s a child, literally, having a child. She is not physically able to handle the stresses of pregnancy much less have any maturity about raising a child when she should be home playing with dolls and going to slumber parties with her little girl aged friends herself. She’s 11 for cryin out loud not an adult.
Culture or not this is just sick and there is no way to justify this.

Culture and tradition are not unwavering neccessaries…they are not like breathing, needed for life and unchanging.

Traditions do always change over time.

And judge…there are culturs where girls are genitaly mutilated..it is their culture and I think people have every right to judge them and ban a cultural practice that is harming someone.

Culture and tradition should end there, where it harms someone.

Yes, in the middle ages it was common for men to rape girls and marry them or just call them sluts and burn them..cultural…

Now we know that there are terrible risks involved when teenagers get pregnant and their body is not fully grown..death rates are high there..

They are not a different breed of humans who is fully grown with 11, they are humans just like us.

Some girls may be able to handle such early pregnancies, but that should not encourage anyone to proudly stand behind such a ‘culture’

Her mother wished she could have had an other choice..she didn´t get married and pregnant because it was her first wish, she did that to flee from a forced marriage with someone she didn´t love.

She fell in love for the first time, not wanting to marry someone else, choosing her only way out..that is not a cultural good thing.

I bet if she did have the choice, she wouldn´t have married or slept so hastly with the boy..how many teenagers do you know that would have married with 11…except those who would have been forced to be married otherwise at 11 to someone they don´t like..

What a bunch of freaks!!

If a woman loses her virginity before marriage, the deal is off? So she has to marry when she’s just a child herself so that their virginity is assured? And in this day and age they are still paying a dowry? And 2 year old baby is engaged to an 8 year old?! Will they even grow up to like each other?? Will one of them be gay or lesbian or fall in love with another person??

These people are living in the biblical ages. Like in the times of Moses. It’s important for societies to grow and advance and progress while still keeping the traditions that don’t harm others. Otherwise you end up being nothing but a group of freaks just like the people in the Middle East who stone women.

These so called “traditions” always end up hurting girls and women the worse. So sad. :(

What is wrong with you ppl? Culture…this is CHILD ABUSE…sexually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and neglect. Just because abuse has been going on for generations doesn’t make it right. A little girl’s body is not made for sex, getting pregnant, and giving birth.

Seems like the cause of them running away to get married at such a young age is the arranged marriages. How bout letting them choose before she’s the youngest great-grandmother at 34 and so on.

I don’t care if it’s a tradition, a child at 11 yrs old should be playing with dolls or be in girl scouts not out having sex getting married, what kind of life is that for a child. it ruins them for the rest of their lives. they don’t know what they are doing, this makes me sick to my stomach to think that there are people who allow this. it’s a shame history repeats it’s self, but only if you allow it. I have 1 teenage dghtr and 3 young adults and I’m very lucky to say that has not happened here. I had my first at 21 yrs, but even that’s young. I’m very blessed.
