Director Danny Boyle is reaching out to help her family get a new home!
Rubina Ali stole our hearts as the youngest Latika in the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, but now she is facing tragedy as her house was gutted by a raging fire which destroyed much of her Mumbai slum!
“There was fire everywhere, there was so much chaos, my house was completely burned down, the whole slum was burned down,” Rubina tells CNN.
Rubina, 12, was watching television on March 4 when she heard neighbors start to yell about the fire, so she grabbed as many belongings as she could and got out of the house. Unfortunately, the accolades she recieved for the film were lost in the blaze.
“My awards are gone, my memories are gone,” Rubina says.
Although her family is residing in temporary shelter, they are moving into a new residence next month thanks to a trust set up for the Slumdog Millionaire child actors, facilitated by director Danny Boyle.
“They were in transit. They were just about to move to an apartment the Jai Ho Trust has allotted for them,” trustee Nirja Mattoo says. “But as the building is new, they were waiting for the water and electricity to be installed. But unfortunately this incident happened.”
It’s great Danny has so much love for the people behind his smash film!
