New evidence was found in the case against the man who is accused of killing his adopted daughter and botching his own murder-suicide.
Jorge Barahona, a 53-year-old Florida-based pest exterminator is accused of murdering his 10-year-old daughter and attempting a murder-suicide on himself and his son. Authorities removed a bath tub from his home this morning, as a key piece of evidence in their case against Jorge for charges of child abuse and attempted murder.
On Valentine’s Day, a transportation employee found Jorge’s truck pulled over on the side of the road, with 10-year-old Victor Barahona inside covered in an acid-base metal cleaning chemical and suffering from respiratory distress. Jorge was found unresponsive on the ground near the truck and the body of his 10-year-old adopted daughter Nubia was found dead in the back of the truck.
Both father and son were rushed to the hospital, and survived the botched murder-suicide attempt. The boy sustained chemical burns and doctors found evidence of prior injuries: broken bones, scars, and ligature marks on his wrists. The boy is still waiting to be released from the hospital.
Police say Jorge was distressed after the death of his daughter, so he gave his son a handful of sleeping pills and parked his car in a place that would be easily found. Victor and Nubia Barahona are ten year-old adopted twins.
Jorge Barahona and his wife Carmen adopted four children with special needs ages 7-11, and they have been investigated three times by child services for abuse. The most recent investigation happened four days before Nubia’s death, after Carmen’s 7-year-old granddaughter told a therapist about the abuse she had witnessed.
“When they are being punished, they are being taped up and with their arms and legs and put in a bathtub,” the unidentified therapist said. “They are in there all day and all night, and she undoes their arms when they eat.”
Police hope that the bath tub will provide more information to convict Jorge with. Jorge is awaiting trial, and his wife Carmen hasn’t been charged with any crime yet.
What a horrifying story! We’re glad that young Victor survived, and urge everyone to report any instance of child abuse that they witness.
