Kirstin Says: Is 'American Idol' Star Thia Megia The New Charice?

Charice will always be “the most talented girl in the world,” but is American Idol‘s Thia Megia right on her heels? I think so…

It’s not just that American Idol stand out Thia Megia LOOKS eerily similar to super star (and fellow Filipina) Charice…she SOUNDS like her too. After watching Hollywood Week’s solo auditions Feb. 17, I was struck by the many similarities between the two young artists. I hope Thia has half of Charice’s success!

Since singing Adele‘s “Chasing Pavements” at the Milwaukee auditions, Thia — a 15-year-old Redwood City, California native — has been a stand out in the competition. She has the same quiet confidence I’ve loved all these years in Charice.

Jennifer Lopez raved after Thia’s first audition, telling her, “I love you. I think you’re the total package. You’re very comfortable up there.”

I wasn’t sure Thia had made it past the group auditions, but was tickled to death when she showed up during the solos to sing a chill-inducing version of “What a Wonderful World.” The judges loved it and the other contestants went wild.

Much like Charice made her way through the reality TV circuit before truly hitting it big, this isn’t Thia’s first time at the rodeo. In 2009, when she was 14-years-old, Thia competed on America’s Got Talent, but got eliminated early on in the competition. Although I don’t know she’ll ever shine brighter than Charice, perhaps American Idol is finally Thia’s chance to break out. What do YOU think?

UPDATE: Thanks, Chasters for your help! Turns out Charice and Thia are actually friends who met through David Foster. How cool! Maybe Charice will come out and support Thia during live performances if she makes it to the top.

THIA i love you! a great singer and i love the vocals, different, yet spectacular! no need to compare yourself to other artists, instead just be “Thia Megia” all the way and make your OWN name an icon to be respected…

i can’t wait to see your other appearances on the media and i’m looking forward to it.. post more songs of yours on your youtube accounts please… your fans will be very happy!

I support both of them..they’re good in their own rights. Charice, though, is in different zone. A vocal prodigy.

Charice should mentor all the AI contestants. She sets a benchmark for them. Charice honestly makes it harder for me to appreciate watching AI because I kinds compare the contestants to Charice in terms of vocal prowess. Charice’s voice is wicked and fearless.

When Charice sings, ” angels fly out” and even the HEAVEN will come down to listen. To compare her to Charice..uhmm not even close. Good luck on AI, though.

Thia, you should sing big and upbeat songs and not some boring ballads because you’ll bore the audience if you keep doing that. I am already bored after watching you 4 times singing all ballads.

Thia, Just watched u last night. You might end up in the bottom 3.You can’t be conservative all the time girl. You got to let it all out. Sorry but Charice is in another level.

Thia is good but after hearing her sing, she and Charice are incomparable as they have different voices. Charice’s strength is her precision and versatility, as she is able to sing a wide spectrum of songs from different genres with perfect control and vocal technique. Listen to their performances side-by-side and I’m sure you’ll know what I mean. :)

I am rooting for Thia as she is avery talented singer and at that age, who woild not admire such talent? But as for Charice, I have seen this prodigy grow-up virtually and has followed her career since her LBS days in the Philippines up to where she is now. Have rooted and suported Charice and will continue to do so. But to compare Charice with Thia? Well the truth is Charice makes people emote and cry with her singing virtousity, l=making listeners feel the emotions of her songs. A talent and skill wanting in most singers. I still ahve to experience this effect from Thia.

IMO, Thia is NOT the next Charice. Thia is and will always be the first THIA.

i love them both, THIA MEGIA and CHARICE. no need to compare them, they’re both great in their own careers and they are good friends, don’t make them fight as if they’re the ones competing each other.

There’s no sense comparing Thia to Charice.Thia is just starting to get known & still in the process of honing her craft while Charice is already a seasoned singer, & a great one, at that.Let’s just hope that someday she’ll be as good as Charice if not better.

This’s latest performance in american idol is good,pleasant in the ears but nothing compared to charice. i wish her luck though :)

What racist bullshit. Charice and Thia look nothing alike and their style of singing aren’t even close to similar. Just because both girls are Filipina you think they look at sing alike?
