Lowering the competing age was the best move Idol made this season. The 15-year-old contestants Jacee Badeaux and Lauren Alaina were the shining stars of the night!
More than 300 hopefuls made it to American Idol‘s season 10 Hollywood Week and out of all the ones we saw, it was the youngest contestants who impressed me the most!
This is the first season Idol producers have allowed 15-year-olds to audition for their shots to be the next American Idol and I think it was the best move FOX has made. There’s a unique energy to the younger teens — they aren’t jaded yet and their eyes twinkle. It’s refreshing.
My early favorite, Lauren Alaina Suddeth — the 15-year-old blonde from Georgia — wailed on her rendition of “Unchained Melody.” I got instant chills. Her voice is booming…it’s effortless. We’re talking Carrie Underwood/Kelly Clarkson level talent.
Another youngin’, Jacee Badeaux, looks closer to 12 years old than 15 and his voice hasn’t changed yet. He gently sang “God Bless the Broken Road,” wowing the judges and me. Even though Jacee sounds and looks like an infant, he’s so confident on stage, it’s reassuring to watch.
Up next on my “wow” list is Hollie Cavanagh, who seems so innocent and sweet, I consider her part of the young group too (even though she’s 17-years-old). Hollie screwed up during her first audition in Austin, Texas and had to start over, so I was nervous for her in Hollywood Week. After all, you only get one shot to prove yourself the first day.
Little Miss Cavanagh surprised me though and seemed nothing like the shaking, crying mess she was during the auditions. Her rendition of “When I Look At You” was strong, confident and nearly pitch-perfect…definitely Top 10 material.
I think I’m finally believing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe when he claims this is the most talent we’ve seen in a long time. If these three contestants are any indication, season 10 is going to be INCREDIBLE.
