Christina Aguilera explains her Super-giant lyrical lapse — but are you outraged … or just embarrassed for her?
Xtina did a fine job singing the national anthem before the Super Bowl last night. Not so much on the lyrics, which she’s probably sung a thousand times. She’s already issued a statement about what happened, and it sounds like she’s blaming the “moment” for her memory loss.
In her statement, Christina says, “I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”
It was less than a minute into her performance when Christina mixed up the lyrics. Instead of singing, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming”, Christina sang, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last reaming.” A source told Popeater.com that the mistake was more than a little awkward, saying, “A hush fell over the stadium and everyone was looking at each other.” Luckily, Christina didn’t fumble, kept on going, and sang the rest of the lyrics correctly.
However, this is a mistake that won’t be so easily forgotten. Another source told Popeater, “This was the biggest performance of her career and she blew it. To mess up the lyrics was a disaster.” Christina was said to be “devastated” when she went backstage after her performance.
Before the Super Bowl, Christina had expressed how excited she was at having the opportunity to sing the National Anthem, saying, “I have been performing the anthem since I was seven years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true. I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event.”
