A mother of six is being charged with child abuse for forcing her child to drink hot sauce as a form of punishment.

Jessica Beagley is in a heap of trouble for making her 7-year-old son drink hot sauce and take a freezing cold shower because he’d misbehaved. Her 10-year-old daughter caught it all on tape and it was featured on an episode Dr. Phil back in November. Now the mother of six has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse in Anchorage, Alaska. HollyMoms, do you consider this to be child abuse?

Now that she is facing child abuse charges, her defense attorney Bill Ingaldson tells The Today Show that Jessica regrets sending in the video, explaining that she was looking for advice on disciplining her misbehaving child. Now, Jessica will learn her own lesson about punishment.

On the show Jessica told Dr. Phil McGraw she had trouble disciplining her adopted Russian son Kristoff, 7, who has a twin, Kolya. “We’ve tried a lot of different things to punish the kids,” she says on the show, admitting she’s angry at the boy all the time, screams at him, puts hot sauce in his mouth and places him in a cold shower when he acts up. Her home video brought many audience members to tears, according to the Dr. Phil website.

“We have to distinguish between discipline and punishment, this is punishment and torture,” Dr. Janet Taylor tells Today‘s Matt Lauer. Pediatrician Dr. Alanna Levine adds to that sentiment, saying, “This is completely inappropriate. It is terrible for the child being punished and for the older children in the home, as well, witnessing it.”

HollyMoms, have you tried this hot sauce technique?  Even actor turned author Lisa Whelchel promotes the hot sauce method in her book Creative Correction, saying that it is a great way to keep kids in line. Personally, I feel that this punishment is cruel and unacceptable. What do you think?
