LAURA'S LOVE ADVICE: Does A Guy That's Dumped You Ever Deserve A Second Chance, Like Taylor Is Giving Jake?

A new report claims that Jake Gyllenhaal has begged Taylor Swift to take him back. If it’s true — should she?

Jake Gyllenhaal did a bad, bad thing by breaking Taylor Swift‘s tender young heart and then callously flirting with her arch-nemesis, Camilla Belle. But a new story suggests that the gorgeous Love & Other Drugs star has seen the error of his ways and wants the country cutie back in his life. If there’s any truth to this report, should she take him back?

To be fair, if this particular story is true (though it sounds too fabricated to be possible), Taylor should be flinging her arms around her ex and screaming ‘Never let go, Jake!’ According to In Touch Weekly, the 29-year-old  realized how much the photos of him flirting with Camilla had hurt 21-year-old Taylor, and immediately booked a flight to visit her in Nashville, Tenn. Bring on the Princess Bride-esque romance here: when Jake’s flight from Memphis was delayed, he drove 200 miles in a rental car to see her!

Again, I’m not particularly inclined to believe that this is 100% factually correct, but if it is, Jake definitely deserves a second chance. Though he played hard and loose with her feelings, this kind of romantic gesture is a big deal — and one men don’t typically make. It IS possible to realize what you’ve lost after it’s gone.

However, this would be the exception, not the rule. Like Greg Behrendt drove home to in the book He’s Just Not That Into You, YOU are the rule. If a guy has dumped you, he had his reasons, and you shouldn’t consider taking him back or falling back into his arms.

Every situation is different though. Did you break up because your relationship was long-distance, and you couldn’t stand the pressure? Did you break up because, like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, you needed to figure out if you really made for each other, as you hadn’t dated anyone else? These cases are exceptions.

But let’s go back to Jake and Taylor. Say he didn’t drive 200 miles out of his way after dumping her out of the blue because she was too ‘young’ for him? Come on! The girl is 21, and at 29, it’s just blindingly obvious that she’s too young for him! She’s so immature (and I don’t mean that in a negative way) that she has to discuss every single heartbreak she’s ever had in a song, for Pete’s sake. As an older and wiser person, Jake should automatically have realized this, and been thinking with his brain…not something else.

Unless it’s true love, ladies, DON’T take him back. You owe that it to yourself. As Aretha Franklin said, it’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
