Andy Says: I Loved The 'American Idol' Season Premiere — Steven Tyler Is The Best Judge Yet!

Seriously, what were we all so worried about? It’s the same show we knew and loved — only better!

American Idol kicked off its landmark tenth season Jan. 19, and I couldn’t be more pleased to report that my favorite reality guilty pleasure (sorry RuPaul’s Drag Race) is just as pleasurable as ever. Something about Jennifer Lopez has always rubbed me the wrong way, but she proved herself to be personable and definitely worthy of her seat. But it’s J. Lo’s fellow newbie Steven Tyler who stole the show — and my heart. His awkward noises, bizarre fascination with young female contestants, and overall glamorous demeanor won season 10 a permanent place on my DVR schedule.

And for those of you who actually watch the show for the contestants, rest assured, they’re the same as they’ve always been: The good ones are just as impressive, and the bad ones are just as hysterical. Here were my two favorites on either end of the spectrum:

  • Robbie Rosen: Like off-looking contestants before him, no one expected this Screech Powers look-alike to “wow” them, but all of America was put to shame when Robbie let loose his melodic magic. Seriously, I would buy his rendition of The Beatles‘ “Yesterday” on iTunes right now if I could.
  • Michael Perotto: With Kermit the Frog‘s voice and Rob Pattinson‘s signature plaid, Michael was the most awkward contestant of the night. That was partly because he chose to sing Tina Turner‘s “Proud Mary,” but also because he literally could not stop burping. Gross.

I leave you with my “most memorable” performance of the night from Japanese sensation (yup, he’s a sensation) Yojo “Pop” Asano:

The only thing I was mildly disturbed by was the judges’ obvious desire to find the next Justin Bieber. In previous years, judges were skeptical of even the most talented 15-year-old. “You’re so young,” they would say. “I’m not sure if you’re ready to handle this yet.” But on the season premiere, a 15-year-old contestant was literally let through to the next round BECAUSE she’s so young! We’ve known for a while now that the judges would be looking for a teen star, but it still didn’t feel right.

What did you guys think of the premiere? Do you agree with me that the new judges are a perfect fit, or am I dead wrong?
