Bath time is not the time to be updating your status! A Colorado woman faces 48 years in jail for letting her son drowned because she was on the social networking site.
Stories like this make me cringe. Shannon Johnson, 34, was arrested on Jan. 11 and has been charged with one count of child abuse after she admitted to authorities that she was distracted and using Facebook when her 13-month-old son drowned in the bathtub on September 20. How could a mother be this careless?
“The Defendant admitted that she was on Facebook playing a game called Cafe World, checking on friends’ status and sharing videos, in the living room, while [the infant] was in the bathtub,” according to the the Weld County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit. If convicted, Shannon, a Ford Lupton, Colorado resident, could spend 16 to 48 years behind bars, says Jennifer Finch, community relations director for the Weld County District Attorney’s Office. “This is an extremely tragic incident,” Undersheriff Margie Martinez told HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell. What an understatement. This is an outrage!
According to the affidavit, the child died on September 20, 2010 with the autopsy listing anoxic brain injury, cardiac arrest and drowning as the cause of death. Shannon says she put her son, who had a seizure a month before the accident, in the bathtub after he ate and played that morning. The water was higher than usual, but she said she would often leave the boy in the tub alone. According to the affadavit: “She started doing this when he really wanted to be left alone; he was a very independent baby. She also said she knew what it was like to be told no, she didn’t want her baby to be told no and didn’t want him to be known as a mama’s boy.” Is she crazy? You NEVER leave a child — let alone a 1-year-old — unattended around water. She was asking for trouble. I wonder if she updated her status to read ‘just killed my son’ before calling for help?
She acknowledged leaving the infant alone “was so stupid.” Shannon was being held on $100,000 bond, according to Finch. A bond hearing is scheduled for January 31.
HollyMoms, do you think 48 years behind bars is enough of a punishment for the woman, or should she have to serve life for the “so stupid” death of her son?
