At the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala Jan. 8, Jake flew solo and seemed withdrawn without his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift!

Even though his romance with Taylor Swift was short-lived, Jake Gyllenhaal was noticeably alone at the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Gala. Behind his big grin and funny jokes, Jake seemed distracted and lonely.

The 30-year-old actor attended the festival’s black tie gala and presented the Desert Palm Achievement Actress Award to his long time friend, previous co-star and one-time girlfriend, Natalie Portman. The first thing I noticed as Jake sped down the red carpet (flanked by his publicist), was his excessive facial hair. Throughout the last couple months, he’s sported a scruffy little beard, but this one took it to a whole new level. He looks like a mountain man!

During the meal, Jake sat next to Natalie, her fiance, Benjamin, and their publicist the entire time. When Natalie was away from their table, Jake gabbed with her hubby-to-be, rather than chatting with any of the many attractive girls at the event. Not only that, but he barely touched his three course meal — and let me tell you, it was delicious (plus, Carey Mulligan scarfed hers down!).

Throughout the evening, Jake seemed like he couldn’t finish up with his duties quickly enough. He was one of the first people to arrive at the official after party at the Parker hotel, where he joked around with Mark Wahlberg in the lobby before getting accosted by hoards of harmless lady fans. Consequently, he quietly slipped out before the majority of guests even made it to the party.

I can’t help but wonder if Jake misses 21-year-old Taylor Swift. Although he reportedly called it quits after only two months, both of them always seemed so entertained by one another in their photos together. At the festival, Jake seemed anything but entertained or carefree, leading me to think maybe HE’S the one who wants to go “back to December.”
