So sad. The stars reflect on the ‘devastating’ shooting through tweets & official statements.
The tragic shooting of 19 people in Tuscon, Ariz., hit the nation hard Jan. 8 — but some celebrities were hit harder than others, as Gwyneth Paltrow and Sophia Bush were both related to the victims. Gwyneth is the cousin of Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who is now in critical condition, and Sophia was the second cousin of 9-year-old Christina Green, who was killed in the senseless shooting.
“There are no words to explain what my cousin’s family is going through in Arizona,” Sophia tweeted after the shooting. “How can this be? Violence is never the answer. … If you know anyone who is struggling, please reach out to them. No one should feel so alone that they resort to senseless violence.”
And Gwyneth released this statement, via Entertainment Tonight:
“Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting congresswoman Giffords, my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as well as the other victims of this horrible act of senseless violence.”
22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner was taken into custody Jan. 8 after opening fire at a Tuscon, Ariz., grocery store that left six people dead and 13 more injured.
President Barack Obama has announced a national moment of silence Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. ET.
