We know Sarah Palin will have a meltdown – tackling the topic of abortion and teens , but it’s a big issue and we wonder- can MTV handle it well?
MTV is planning a bold addition to their 16 and Pregnant franchise with a new special focusing on abortion called No Easy Decision. Entertainment Weekly reports that the special, airing at 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 28, will follow former 16 and Pregnant star Markai Durham as she debates whether or not to have an abortion after becoming pregnant for a second time. Celebrity Rehab host Dr. Drew Pinsky will also be involved with the project, discussing abortion with other real-life teens who elected to terminate their pregnancies.
We understand MTV is aiming to show all sides of teen pregnancy with their programming, and we applaud the channel’s decision to explore the subject based on one girl’s journey . We just hope this is all done with warmth and sympathy and is not exploitive.
We also fear that if Markai does decide to opt to terminate her pregnancy, that she will get hate mail and possibly even death threats. Thankfully – for those who worried that the shows, 16 and Pregnant, and Teen Mom, would encourage teen pregnancies – the new data doesn’t support that. The nation’s teen birth rate hit an all time low in 2009, according to the National Center of Health Statistics government , released Dec 22nd.

Everyone should calm down. Everyone believed that 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom would make girls think having a baby is great and everything else, yet teen birth rates are at an all time low. Teens don’t want to have babies so young because these shows are showing them how difficult it is to juggle having a baby, working, going to school, and spending time with friends can be.
It makes sense for MTV to be doing an abortion show, because its something that occurs daily and isn’t just going away. Teens, and adults as well, should be aware of ALL of their options when they find out they’re pregnant. Some individuals can’t afford a baby, and can’t even afford the medical costs to have to go to the doctor during a pregnancy, so how can you say they can just give it up for adoption? Not all people who adopt babies can afford to pay another person’s medical bills (especially with the cost of just delivering the baby!) so sometimes adoption can’t be chosen.
Everyone has the right to their own opinion, whether you believe abortion is alright or it isn’t. I don’t necessarily believe that it’s a good thing to do, or a bad thing. I think its an alright option for individuals who can’t afford a child, whether it be to keep it for the long run, or they simply couldn’t even afford to have it because of hospital bills. I do believe that those who simply choose to have an abortion because they don’t want to have another baby, even though they can afford it and have no actual reason not to keep it, or not to consider adoption, is wrong. If you have the means to keep a child, or to put it up for adoption, you should do it. But for those who can’t, and have reasons for why they can’t, leave them alone. You don’t know anyone’s story so don’t judge them until you do.
