Why Is 'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood Refusing To Use Birth Control?

The 20-year-old is reportedly pregnant again because she doesn’t use birth control. Why is she acting so irresponsibly? We asked an expert.

According to the new issue of In Touch Weekly magazine, it’s no surprise that Teen Mom star Amber Portwood is pregnant again and doesn’t know who the father is. “Amber says she’s been diagnosed as a ‘nympho’ — a sex addict,” an insider tells the magazine, adding that ever since she and Gary Shirley — who is the father of her 2-year-old daughter, Leah – broke up, she’s been sleeping with any man who gives her the time of day. “Most were one-night stands with complete strangers.”

Sadly, despite having regained major custody of her daughter, sources tell In Touch that the 20-year-old would much rather be getting busy between the sheets with her current boyfriend Clinton Yunker, who didn’t even know that she was pregnant again, than spend time with her daughter. “She’s with Clinton right now, but it doesn’t mean she’s settling down. She wants to have fun while she’s young. It appears she’s neglecting her child to be with guys.” How horrible is that? I feel so bad for her little girl.

Amber’s boyfriend didn’t know that she was pregnant

Being promiscuous is stupid, but being unsafe about it is absolutely idiotic. “She isn’t on birth control because she doesn’t have health insurance,” reveals the insider. “And she rarely uses condoms because she doesn’t like them.”

New York-based relationship expert, Dr. Gilda Carle strongly believes that fame is the reason that Amber is putting herself and her children at risk. “Amber is an MTV star so there’s a payoff for her to continue getting pregnant. It translates into money, fame and, of course, attention,” Dr. Carle tells HollyBaby.com. “Sleeping with men is not a profession. In order for Amber to quit her promiscuity, the payoff must be cut off.”

Sadly, Amber’s current situation isn’t that uncommon. A recent study found that one-third of teen moms get pregnant again within two years. The study found that although the 150 moms who took part in the research got pregnant as teens, they still were not consistent with their contraception use after giving birth to their babies. Researchers found that a clear majority of these teens had resumed having sex just three months after giving birth and a third of them reported using no contraception! A total of 33% of the young mothers got pregnant again within two years — and two were even pregnant again within six weeks!

Amber got a tattoo of her daughter

Dr. Carle feels that in order for Amber to clean up her act, she needs to step away from the spotlight and should be held accountable for her adolescent irresponsibility. “She’s lost sight of the most important element, however — how to best raise her children once she has them,” she tells HollyBaby.

HollyMoms, if Amber was your daughter, what words of wisdom would you give her?

Saying she doesn’t use birth control because she has no insurance is just an excuse. You don’t need insurance to go to the health department and get pills. Even Walmart sells them for less than $10 for a months supply if you get certain brands. I think she can probably afford $10/mo.

Not true, but it is for a very reasonable price, much cheaper than having another child. Planned parenthood requires you are a current patient who has had an examination by their physician, which can cost up to $70 and then they decide how much your birth control is on a sliding scale based on income. I’ve paid almost $50 a month for birth control before getting back on health insurance with my employer, I figure $50 is alot, but much less than what a baby would cost me. Take control of your bodies and lives ladies, no one is going to do it for you!
