The Dexter duo are divorcing — but here’s how they can keep it civil on set!
Falling in love with a guy you work with seems like the perfect situation: you’re always at work, as is he, so you’ll always see one another. Fantastic! But what happens when your love suddenly dies and you’re forced to see your ex every single day, like Dexter‘s resident married couple Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall now have to do?
The couple, who have been married for two years and play brother and sister on the hit Showtime series (awkward!), announced their impending divorce in a joint statement yesterday, but the tension between them has reportedly been present for months. In fact, they haven’t been getting along all season — and their cast members are worried their breakup is going to cause problems for the show.
Unlike Blake Lively and Penn Badgley, another recently broken twosome who have continued to work together, the breakup between Jennifer and Michael does NOT seem to be amicable. However, despite all the bad blood between them, there IS a way to make things bearable on-set, or for those of you NOT involved in the TV biz (let’s face it, this applies to most of us) at work.
- KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. If it’s over, it’s over — you don’t need to rehash former slights or ongoing fights in the workplace. It isn’t professional! So if you can’t help but to find with your former lover, avoid him as much as you can.
- BE CORDIAL. It may cost you to be nice and polite, but it will be worth it in the long run, when your co-workers AREN’T complaining to your boss that you’re creating a hostile work environment.
- DO NOT DISCUSS YOUR DATING LIFE AT WORK. It’s only going to cause tension, which is the last thing you need. Be respectful of what you and your ex had and leave the particulars of moving on at home.
- GO TO YOUR HAPPY PLACE. It’s going to hurt like hell seeing your ex every single day, so surround yourself with things that will make you happy. If a cupcake a day brings you joy, do it until the hurt stops…you may just have to work out a little more than usual!
Working with someone you dated sucks, but it IS doable. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?
