Thank goodness! Eight years after being taken from her Utah bedroom in the middle of the night, kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart watches as the man who took her is found guilty in the court of law
It’s been a long road of recovery for 23-year-old Elizabeth Smart, who was snatched from her bedroom in 2002 when she was just 14-years-old. Thankfully she was able to find some closure as a jury found Brian David Mitchell, 53, guilty on charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines for the purposes of illegal sex.
Elizabeth’s kidnapping made national headlines and was followed by a massive man-hunt that turned up nothing. Nine months later in early 2003 she was found wandering the streets of Salt Lake City with Brian and his wife Wanda Barzee, 65.
In court, Elizabeth gave compelling testimony detailing her nine months of captivity that included being forced into a polygamous marriage with Wanda and Brian, daily rapes and being forced to ingest drugs and alcohol. For her part, Wanda, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for her involvement, says she was duped into participating in the kidnapping by Brian.
“He was a great deceiver,” she said.
Brian’s defense attorneys attempted to plead insanity to have him placed in a prison mental hospital. The judge rejected it, even with Brian babbling and singing to the Lord during the hearing. Prosecutors were pleased, claiming Brian was faking mental illness to avoid a conviction.
His sentencing hearing won’t be until May 2011, but he could be facing life in prison for his disgusting and criminal acts.
