We got to chat with Johnny Wujek, Katy’s close friend and stylist, who shared all the details of Katy’s elaborate, custom-made costumes!
Katy Perry knows how to put on a show, and the VH1’s Divas Salute the Troops Concert on Dec. 3 was no exception, where the star pulled out five different costumes. Johnny Wujek has been working with Katy for years, and we got the chance to talk to the stylist behind the little lycra dresses, elaborate costumes, and gorgeous gowns we’re so used to seeing on the star. He said while some of the custom-made get-ups (like the Jessica Rabbit-esque dress) they had been talking about for a while, others came together mere minutes before the show — like the camouflage latex get-up the star wore on stage performing with Nicki Minaj!
“My grandfather was in WWII, and I brought all of his hats from the war with me,” Johnny said. “Right before she [Katy] walked on stage she said, ‘I wanna wear grandpa’s hat,’ so I took it off and she put it on and went out.” Much like the authentic hat, Katy’s costumes represented the theme of the evening. Johnny described her first look, embellished hot pants and a custom made American Flag bra top, as “Wonder Woman America.”
So, what about the show-stopping strapless dress that fit Katy like a glove? “The Jessica Rabbit inspired dress is something we’ve been wanting to do for a while and we thought it would be good for Firework. She’s so curvy, shape wise she has that Jessica Rabbit figure and the dress was very sexy.” While the star looked amazing,
One thing that always stands out to me is the impeccable fit of Katy’s costumes and dresses — and while it seems effortless, Johnny said that isn’t always the case! “There are times when zippers bust and dresses need to be cut off her. She loves her latex dresses but they can be tricky — they get really sticky and roll up so sometimes she needs a hand with them.”
So, how involved is Katy when it comes to her wardrobe choices? Johnny said the two work very close together, collaborating on everything from her get-ups on stage to her fun frocks on the red carpet. “Katy’s very involved, we’ll BBM all day sending each other ideas and pictures — it’s a team effort.”
