David Hasselhoff and his daughters are ready to set the record straight on their new TV show The Hasselhoffs!
David Hasselhoff has had a long and successful career, starring in hit TV shows like Knight Rider and Baywatch. But ‘The Hoff’,” 58, might be best known for the now infamous video, in which he lay drunk on the floor unable to eat a burger as his daughter records his antics. He may have been going through a nasty divorce with Pamela Bach at the time, but David and his daughters Taylor, 20, and Hayley, 18, are ready to prove that that tape should not define their family on their new show, The Hasselhoffs. “The very first thing in the show we say is, hey, this tape was not me,” David says to ParentDish.com. “It was private. It was shot by my daughter and sold and exploited and everyone put in on TV for ratings.” Now, the Hasselhoffs are hoping to get strong ratings for their A&E show, which features Taylor and Hayley’s dream of breaking into the music business.
Although the Hoff originally wanted to shoot a scripted show about his own life, his daughters’ dream convinced him to go forward with a reality show, instead. “My daughters came to me and said they want to be singers and would I help them,” David explains. “They told me, “Dad, we really want to do this, can you help us? Can you help us get into the business?” I said I would do what I can. So I called A&E back and said, what if we were to do a show highlighting my daughters pursuing a music career? That was the template.”
David also saw The Hasselhoffs as an opportunity to set the record straight on his family dynamic and the career he prides himself on. “C’mon guys, get over it,” David says about the video. “It’s, like, four years ago and millions of views later and parodies and it’s become my signature. So I said, this is an opportunity to show this is not who we are. I’m still successful in this business. I have a lot of respect for it and the audience. I’m still standing, baby! And I’ve got a whole gigantic career ahead of me.”
David says that his relationship with Taylor and Hayley is “fiercely loyal, incredibly honest, just devastatingly heartwarming and intense,” and he wants viewers to see that. “We’re really tight,” he says. “As much as the marriage fell apart, the relationship with my daughters has never wavered. We’ve only got stronger and they’re even more volatile over defending me than I am about myself.” Hollymoms, are you going to watch The Hasselhoffs?
