The seventh entry in the much beloved series gets the biggest opening ever for the saga, and the fifth best opening of all time!
As if there were any doubt, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows won the box office this weekend in a very major way. Deadline reports the film made an unbelievable $125 million over three days, over $100 million more than its closest competitor. Looks like the endless interviews by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint paid off!
As for the top five, Megamind stayed in second place for the second week in a row with $17 million, bringing its total take to just over $110 million. Unstoppable made an okay $13.2 million in its second week in release and Due Date continued to do good business with $8.7 million and a total now of $72.2 million.
Coming in fifth was this weekend’s other new entry, The Next Three Days, which could only manage to make $6.7 million. Even with big stars Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks and Liam Neeson on board, it seems that the interest just wasn’t there.
