Is this sweet and romantic or what? Prince William is so sure Kate’s ‘the one’ and the one forever, he’s slipped his beloved mom Diana’s ring on her finger.
Prince William of Wales proposed to his longtime lady Kate Middleton, both 28, after eight years of dating and months of “will he/won’t he” debate. Turns out that William had popped the question last month in October, while on the couple’s vacation in South Africa. The couple revealed that and how happy they are at a press conference this morning in St. James’s Palace.
“It was my way of making sure she [Princess Diana] didn’t miss out on today,” Prince William said during a press conference about giving Kate his mother’s ring.
The ring that was worn by Princess Diana during her marriage to Prince Charles was a beautiful oval sapphire encircled by diamonds and it’s worth about $200,000-$250,000 on the open market today, according to Robert DiMattina, owner of Diamond Images USA, Inc. in Miami Florida. “But considering it was Princess Diana’s and the ring has nostalgic value, a private collector might pay millions for it.”
According to Naughty But Nice Rob over at PopEater, after Princess Diana passed away, William’s brother Prince Harry took possession of the ring. But “Harry was happy to give the ring to his brother,” an insider with knowledge of the situation tells Rob. “He loves William and thinks it’s only right that one day the woman sitting next to the King will be wearing his mother’s ring. That’s the way Diana would have wanted it.”
Sweetly, Kate Middleton, the first commoner to marry an heir to the throne in 350 years, wore a dress in a deep shade of blue during the official press conference. It must have been in honor of the late and beloved Diana, who also wore blue for her engagement announcement. The couple plan to marry in the spring or summer of 2011. Can’t wait!
Congrats again, you two!
